How can you network effectively as a sommelier?

Existem várias formas de como um Sommelier se deve relacionar, vai depender do seu plano de carreira. Come?ar por construir a sua marca é essencial, como, por exemplo, ter um perfil aqui LinkedIn. E depois mostrar-se! Para n?o desperdi?ar o tempo em visitas e provas que nada acrescentam, deve questionar: O que quer fazer; o que gosta de fazer; o que sabe fazer; o que n?o sabe fazer. Com base nas respostas tomará consciência a quais eventos ir, quais regi?es/produtores visitar, quais cursos frequentar. E até mesmo se deve aderir a uma associa??o ou participar/criar um grupo de estudo. Uma vez nestes locais ter parte activa, fazer networking.

Visit the wineries. as many as you can. Preferably in person but also virtually. Email them if you must. Get to know the vintners and connect with the farmers.

Share your knowledge and your discoveries. Sharing your knowledge opens discussions and exchanges with others and helps newcomers learn from you.

Agree as per social colaborative business plans because the most important feed cames from consumer and wine lovers. Experts must listen them too

Participating in wine challenges, and wine tasting is a way to gain recognition also. You are also good to stand alone and speak out about what you know or who you met and who you know, stand out, speak out.

Participar em confrarias de vinhos, degustacoes e etc.. Vai te ajudar a conhecer pessoas novas na area e compartilhar conhecimento

Participar de asociaciones, nacionales o internacionales, siempre será de gran valor, no solo como profesional sino como persona, nunca se debe olvidar que la formación de un sommelier es algo integral, no solo hay que saber de vinos, o aromas, hay que saber de historia, geografia... y muchos otros temas.

LinkedIn is a great platform to share knowledge within the Sommelier community; many Sommelier and wine lovers are on LinkedIn, and it is the best platform to exchange between us.

I'd imagine it's a space that isn't particularly well utilised by sommeliers. Truth be told, most industry professionals. Learn how to write good articles. There's lots out there. Technology can be utilised and optimised to write good copy or give the basis for it. Don't just knock out Chat GPT articles though, use it as a framework for ideas, don't just post what it spits out.

An online presence will definitely add substance. Leveraging one’s knowledge on SM platforms will not only help in contributing towards awareness but will also put the sommelier up there on the map . Social Media presence can be a game changer.

So, I decided to exhibit Cultural Confidence in the growing quality of Chinese grape wine. Starting up a facebook page, to care and share the domestic and global progress, in cultural terms more, than in commercial terms. Profiling Chinese grape wine, to get it tasted as widely as possible. Showing, that when it comes to grape wine..... Sino - French collaboration for example, will be a win win. Natural and biodynamic grape wine, can be a China niche. etc.

Volunteer for a cause you believe in. Others need to pay something, even if a preferential charity rate. Otherwise you will not be valued or taken seriously. I speak from experience.

Sin dudas, el tener una buena presencia en redes sociales es vital para darte a conocer y compartir tus experiancias y conocimientos, pero debes ser muy cuidadoso com postear y que postear en cada red... antes de abrir un perfil debes tener muy en claro que vas a comunicar, y que será un perfil profesional... como todo en la vida, mejor informarse bien sobre los alcances y participantes de cada red, no es igual Facebook, instagram, linkedin o tiktok tiene un público determinado y un objetivo.

Siempre, en la vida debemos estar con alguien que nos pueda ense?ar algo nuevo, y lo mejor es buscar algun sommelier con trayectoria, o que tenga un cargo gerencial en empresas o restaurantes para ayudarnos a crecer y posicionarnos.

1- Dont be afraid to say "I dont know" & ask questions. One can learn from about anybody, no matter one's status. Get rid of the self-imposed pressure of appearing like one has to "know all of wine". Very few, if any, do. Openly admitting the areas one is not so strong in shows one is human and.. 2- ...by admitting weaknesses, one displays candor, present oneself as humble. Such traits will help create genuine human relationships. Nobody wants to befriend someone who presents oneself as perfect. Experience (as in life experience) helps greatly with both above points.

Recognize that your tastes and preferences are not the same as others. Somm's job is to help the client find their best wine for the situation. Which is not necessarily what you would choose for yourself. A food example I often use is that some folks like spicy food and others don't. Nether preference is wrong. Cheers.

Collect group of people who you know and who are your friends from wine industry and organize private wine tastings. Share your thoughts and comments about wines. Because everybody knows each others everyone will be more honest, so all of you will listen more carefully because you have mutual respect. This is more casual way, your brain is more concentrated because it is relaxed and than you will learn more...

Networking as a somm is exactly the same as networking as anyone else. Find your local groups. Get involved as much as possible. Join industry groups, if available. Regardless, join outside groups. The more time you can make for this, the more reward you'll get from it.
