How can you negotiate a salary package that is fair to both you and the organization?

As a Recruiter, you should constantly compare the market value of the roles you are hiring for to local competitors to ensure you are competitive. Salaries that are at or below industry average will not attract the most competitive of candidates. On the contrary, those that are above are likely to garner interest. Although compensation and benefits are on factor that interests candidates, it is perhaps the most important. Be a pay leader, not a pay lagger.

Negotiating a salary package that is fair to both you and the organization involves preparation, understanding market standards, and clear communication. Research the standard salary range for your role in your industry and region. This gives you a realistic foundation for your negotiations. During negotiations, be clear and confident in articulating your value and achievements. Highlight your skills, experiences, and contributions that justify your salary expectations. When you are advocating for yourself you have to make sure you get all the important points in because no one knows you better than you do. I know it can be hard to validate your worth, but you are worth it. Yes, of course, you must know “market value” but don’t confuse that will YOUR value. Just saying that you have the same thing as someone else doesn’t equate to your salaries being the same. So when having conversations around comp, don’t just bring up statistics, but bring up specifically why what you do, how you do it and for whom it is done….is clear….and take it a step further for the extra cash and tell them WHY you do it the way you do it…..and how it helps that you bring a why to the role and why is matters.??????????

I recommend approaching salary negotiations strategically. Start by understanding the industry benchmarks for the role. Secondly one must recognize the diverse motivations of every candidates. In addition to a competitive salary, one should offer a tailored mix of monetary and non-monetary benefits. This may include performance bonuses, professional development opportunities, flexible work arrangements, and recognition programs. Understand that each candidate is unique, with varying priorities, and aim to provide a comprehensive package that addresses both their financial and personal growth aspirations. Understanding a candidates needs and aspirations are the corner stone of any salary negotiation. As a recruiter who is focused on retention, I always advise my clients to dig deeper than the bullet points to see the motivation for the person wanting the position. Understanding what the candidate does is obviously critical, but also why they do it and why they want to do it for you is essential in meeting expectations and having retention. Trying to get the best deal out of someone is only going to end up with an empty chair so listen to what they need as much as what you want. Win win ??
