For both the mentor and mentee, checking in is KEY! A plan can be great in a sandbox at the start. But when it comes to executing in reality, sometimes adjustments need to be made. We may not know what the adjustments should be. That's why getting feedback on the process in real time is so important. Rarely when we make plans do they get executed how we originally planned. Take time to review each goal: - Are these goals still realistic? - Are they still measurable? - Do they remain relevant like we thought? - Are we making progress? If not, what is holding us back?

Picture your mentorship as a finely crafted telescope. To aim it at the stars of your goals, you need clear focus. Define what you want to learn, achieve, and communicate. Set a rhythm for feedback – a monthly/weekly check-in, perhaps? With every interaction, ask your mentor for honest critiques and share your own needs. As a mentor, actively invite feedback too. Achievement of outcomes as desired by the mentee should be the primary tool to measure the success of the mentor. If the mentee has… 1) Achieved or excelled at something that they wanted 2) Have got a favourable feedback lately 3) Have got the belief back in themselves 4) Have been able to pull themselves out of a tricky or a threatening situation ….then that should also be considered as the success of both mentee and the mentor.

There is a need for a monitoring mechanism for the mentor -mentee program. This should be done to check on engagement levels for course corrections. One of the ways is designing forms which set parameters and elicit information to track progress.

In my experience, if you don't track your progress you are living in a fantasy world. You will never know where you stand with your plan. If you're like me, if I don't know if I've made any progress I'll get discourage and sometimes angry if I don't see results. Tracking the results can also lead to more awareness of where you're doing well and maybe not so well. Using this data can be very helpful to examine your strengths and weaknesses as you progress in your plan. Having an awareness of where you are is foundational to any area of you life you want to make progress in.

Setting defined outcomes and tracking same is paramount and should not be discountenanced. Putting in place well-articulated deliverables will also help in tracking the outcomes.

How did it go? Just fine. Is that enough? Is that a measurable or succinct response? Any activity or service one is looking to undertake needs to be measurable and its impact assessed. I find reflecting by taking things to a very high top-down level and then zooming back in is an excellent way to do this. This allows one to link and make the new knowledge or skills personal and unique. I always reflect and ask questions to myself and let the outcomes reveal themselves.

In each of these, you can assign a number to your emotion to track how you feel about the subject. 1-10 (10 feeling great about it) - How confident are you about (subject)? - How much do you fear (subject) now? - How anxious does (subject) give you now? - From the beginning to now, how do you feel after the progress you've made about (subject)?
