One thing that ,I have been adapting in most of my migration and build scenarios is "Handling the metadata" and "The ratio between Block size:File size ",though these are the most crucial configurations yet widely ignored ones too . To manage space properly identifying the correct block size, location for storing File System transactions and selection of appropriate File Locking mechanism during concurent access plays a Vital role in optimal storage utilization. Apart from du/df for disk usage check,it is also suggested to use tools like sysstat ,sar -d/-S/-b,ksar for performing historical trend analysis.

You need to understand the workload to be able to tune the file system. There are scripts that will simulate load on the file system with varying sizes of files for Read, Write, Read/Write and Seek operations. Other methods of time trials are using performance load tests on the application using the file system and comparing different builds where other parameters were used. You can run all system tests you want but the real money is when the application gets to use the file system at scale.

Throughput is the focus of filesystems, B/s Filesystems is not designed for high iops and low latency, that is block storage best for. Low latency is nowadays measured in microseconds Filesystems can have many more functions and features, for example with a very fast index engine you can do fancy things like auto placement depending on policys setup to different tiers. Ex if you define a policy to say all .mp3 files should always be stored to my NL-SAS pool.

This is deeply related with the need for robutsness as a design property of a file system. File systems are persistent, that is, data is supposed to survive power cycles and remain there intact; as opposed to CPU, memory registers, etc. where it′s not (non-persistent or volatile). Moving data step by step from non-persistent to persistent (memory to disc or memory to a distributed medium) is an involved process made of many tiny steps (system handling, allocating, etc.) which are performed with the prior knowledge that a failure might occur at any time and corrupt the data or produce an unusable file system. It's not something you leave to the end and must plan accordingly because you may have some security technical controls relating to separation of duties, least privilege and RBAC that will require a proper design from the start. Your file system should be divided in 4 separate disk arrays being OS, APP, DATA and LOGS but you could do with OS+APP on the same physical disk array. That model should also be fault tolerant with RAID1 for OS+APP+LOGS and RAID5or6 for DATA Then create the group and access policies to assign the permissions and rights across the disks to the various users. Such as OS admins should not be able to delete DATA or LOGS... Linux has the S but can allow to Local privilege escalation when not setup correctly.

More often than not I don’t get asked for a filesystem any more. I get asked for a data management platform. 1) global namespace - ability to present the same look and feel from multiple physical locations. 2) multi protocol support - it’s no longer enough to provide SMB / NFS, now you need to consider S3, CSI, HDFS connectivity, and if you what raw performance native Posix clients as well. 3) ILM / HSM - Information Lifecycle Management / Hierarchical Storage Management - not only the ability tier between different online storage tiers ( NVMe / SSD / NL-SAS) but also offline storage tiers - S3 Object Repository or Tape Archive. 4) parallel access support - the big difference in terms of performance and scalability are parallel FS.

There is always a trade-off between most of the working features of a file system. The system engineer must start by asking loud what are the key features he needs from the FS. You may need extended security and auditing while speed may not be a concern. You may on the contrary need speed to manage millions of small files not beeing security a big concern. You may need both security and speed plus tracking of changed blocks or some other characteristic. You can't usually have everything at the same time, thus: ask yourself which are the key features you need for your project.

Might I add scalability, how well the algorithm performs on increasing data or users, for instance. Another important engineering aspect is maintaninability, how easily can we modify, adapt to specialize or generalize the algorithm, debug the code and iterate it to improve it.

Efficacy of caching methods: Determine the efficacy of any caching methods in the file system. Caching can have a major impact on performance.
