How can you maximize your internship in the communication industry?

Setting and having smart goals is what would make your internship truly fulfilling or not. It is what determines how your behave during the internship period and what you would gain before leaving the company. Also having a passion and eagerness to learn can fuel your behavior and make you energetic during the period. Goals + passion + eagerness to learn + appropriate behaviour + successful tasks = great internship experience

When interns join my comms team, I always ask them to think about what they'd like to achieve. Not just in the "I'm here to get experience" sense, but what's a specific project or undertaking they would like to spearhead? With the tentacles of comms reaching in various directions, allowing interns to set clear goals and objectives to help them reach their next step is so important. Interns are there to learn, but you never know what might happen when you let them lead.

Setting clear goals will give you the clarity of what you want to achieve while doing a particular internship. Also it is very much important and advisable to be flexible at the same time to open to new learnings and opportunities.

Doing things is great, continuously working on them is appreciable but taking constructive feedback from your clients and from your mentors is exceptional and makes you the best in the particular field. It also helps you to build meaningful relationships with the clients as they feel that they are being listened to carefully.

In the realm of communication, the path to growth is paved with feedback from colleagues, supervisors, and clients. It acts as a mirror, reflecting strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Embracing feedback allows you to fine-tune your communication style, adapting strategies and techniques to diverse situations and audiences. Regularly seeking and embracing feedback not only demonstrates a commitment to improvement but also turns each input into an opportunity to showcase achievements and reinforce your professional value.

There's no better time to start building relationships with those in the industry than during your internship. Look for opportunities to branch out, try new things, and go to new places. Have a major event happening in your city? Ask your supervisor intern (with some guidance and support, of course) to lead the way and meet some of the key players. Now is the time to explore and learn outside the walls of the office. There's a whole world waiting for you once you exit the building.

No matter what industry you work in, Networking is the key. Especially during internships, It's your gateway to meet new people and build connections with them. But we often get lost in the phrase "Network is networth" and don't understand its true meaning. See every relationship as a genuine connection and not a transactional one.
