How can you maximize your effectiveness as a follower?

In the realm of craftsmanship, understanding one’s role is pivotal. It’s the precision, attention to detail, and dedication that a craftsman brings to their role, which directly impacts the quality of the final product. In our family-run business, aligning with the vision and values is imperative for ensuring the legacy of quality passed down through generations.

One thing I've found helpful is to always put myself in the other persons shoes/boots. I never forget where I came from or how challenging some situations were for me. This makes me more empathetic to everyone I come in contact with. I also crave learning which keeps me open to new ideas, perspectives and information. I treat helping people is an opportunity to learn from them, about them and through them. Finally, I try to practice humility in all I do. I am willing to listen, learn, and acknowledge the ideas and contributions of others. This builds trust and confidence in all parties involved.

Taking initiative in identifying opportunities for refinement in our craft or solving problems before they escalate has been a cornerstone of our success. Proactiveness not only demonstrates value but fosters a culture of creativity and commitment to excellence.

The tradition of craftsmanship is enriched by shared experiences and learnings. By observing, seeking advice, and sharing insights within our community, we’ve broadened our perspective, honed our skills, and upheld a tradition of quality in our industry.

My Number One Lesson Learned? Know thyself. Be honest with yourself about not only your skills - but your aptitudes (inclinations, tendencies). I worked for a very large company as an Implementation Consultant and SME. I do have good organizational skills so two different managers offered to get me onto the Project Management Team. Both times I politely declined. Keeping both the management at the client site and the management in the company happy? I do not have the patience for that! Some years later I was working as an independent consultant. Somehow I allowed myself to be pulled into that role. Sure enough - disaster. Things worked out for me in the end. But I was sitting there asking myself, "What was I thinking? I know better."

Assuming I am competent at my job, a good place to start is a self-assessment of my attitude and sense of team, which can make a difference in our level of effectiveness: - Do I maintain a professional posture and minimize any display of dislike through my facial expressions and body language? - Do people come to me for advice or assistance on a tough problem? - Am I a team player and go the extra mile? - Am I helpful to others and offer assistance to co-workers without being asked? - Am I a positive influence on the group? Do I have a smile on my face and a positive word for others? Ideally, most of the answers are “yes.” These are just a few questions for a follower to ask themselves, their supervisor, or a peer.

Listen - When we lead from a position of listening we can notice what is needed and how best we can position ourselves for the teams success. This may be at the individual level 1:1 and or within the whole team. It could be issues in or outside work. As Stephen Covey would say 'seek to understand'
