How can you master the art of "showing" in your writing?

The aroma of fresh coffee mingled with the earthy scent of rain-soaked soil as Maria stepped onto her balcony. The vibrant colors of dawn painted the sky in hues of orange and pink. Engage your senses to master the art of "showing." Describe what characters see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. Sensory details bring scenes to life, making readers feel present in the moment. Incorporate vivid, specific details. Instead of saying, " It was cold," say, "Biting chill pierced through his coat, leaving his fingers numb."Such descriptions make the experience tangible. By engaging the senses and using vivid details, your writing will transform from mere words to immersive experiences, drawing readers into the world you've created.

Having written over a dozen major works, I'm well aware that it is in fiction that the writer can best bring to his readers the words that will evoke the strongest feelings. In a novel the writer is able to put emotional-bearing pictures that penetrate not on the intellect but the heart. Take part of the descriptions in the prologue of my sea story, "The Sealers." "For eons winds swept this slender rind of land. They scoured its contours, battered its cliffs and, with their ravenous ally the sea, chafed and gnawed at its coasts." You can't put that sort of language into a work of non-fiction. No, without doubt, if you want to "Show" something in your writing, do it either in a poem, short story, or a work of fiction.

This is what I do: 1.- Understand the audience's needs and wants 2.- Empathize with the audience's needs and wants. 3.- Describe a product or service that caters to those needs and wants. The description's showing part is critical to reaching and consolidating the audience's support. To do this, you: 1.- Will create real characters. They already exist, but give them life, and they will now be using your product or service. 2.- Will tell a brief story, a parable, of success around the service or product. Use wording that caters to the senses and awakes feelings, like metaphors, allusions, and similes. 3. Remember to use repetition. Constant repetition is a formidable tool for recording an idea, formula, or image in the audience's mind.

Engage your readers' senses with specific, vivid descriptions in a context: - Sight: "The office gleamed with polished wood desks and large, bright windows." - Sound: "Keyboard clacks and soft phone rings created a steady hum." - Smell: "Freshly brewed coffee mixed with the scent of new stationery." - Taste: "The catered lunch offered tangy lemon chicken and sweet pastries." - Touch: "The leather conference chairs were cool and smooth." Show, don’t tell. Instead of "She was stressed," write: "Her fingers drummed the table, and she bit her lip." Use metaphors and similes like "The meeting was a whirlwind of ideas." Reveal thoughts and emotions through internal monologue.

Active voice instead of passive one is always more engaging, as your audience can put themselves into the situation you are describing. For more distance, like lawyers like to create, you use passive voice.

From my work with business clients, I've seen how the active voice can transform corporate communication. One client, struggling with team motivation, shifted from passive to active voice in emails. Instead of "Targets need to be met by the team," they wrote "Our team will meet the targets." This change boosted accountability and morale. Recommendations: ??Revise for Active Voice: Review your writing and convert passive constructions into active ones. ??Use Strong Verbs: Choose specific, powerful verbs to convey action and intent. ??Limit Passive Voice: Use passive voice selectively for emphasis or variety, maintaining overall engagement and clarity.

Show Internal Thoughts and Reactions Internal monologue and physical reactions can convey a character’s feelings and thoughts. Example: Her heart raced as she glanced over her shoulder, every shadow seeming to reach out and grab her. Use Dialogue Effectively Dialogue can reveal character traits, emotions, and tensions without explicitly stating them. Example: “I’ve never seen him so upset,” John muttered, wiping his sweaty palms on his trousers. “What if he fires me?”

Use Metaphors and Similes These can create strong images and associations in the reader’s mind. Example: His muscles bulged like steel cables beneath his skin, and he lifted the heavy crate with the ease of picking up a feather. Engage the Senses Incorporate details that appeal to the five senses—sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Example: The sun blazed overhead, making the asphalt shimmer and sending waves of heat that prickled their skin. Use Descriptive Language In stead of simply saying the room was messy, go deeper- describe the mess in the room. Example: Books were scattered across the floor, half-eaten pizza slices lay on the table, and clothes were draped over every piece of furniture.

When you dive deeper into the details of scene setting, you take the reader literally on a tour of Visualisation of what you are describing. This creates a clear perspective, triggers emotions, and a deeper understanding. Readers can even see themselves being present and get a sense of experience in that particular setting.

Develop relatability, talk about things that your client/reader is able to relate to. Understand their challenges and struggles. Offer your unique solutions & perspectives to their challenges. Show empathy through your words. I would say it is all inter connected, the more vivid your descriptions are, the more you are able to show, the better you paint the picture, the more engaging your content will be.

We live in a world in both our professional and personal lives where authenticity is highly valued. So your ability to honestly share your story about both your wins and your losses allows readers to get a true glimpse of your emotional self. The audience is pretty content savvy and will quickly disengage if you are disingenuous in your writing or try to gloss over some of the emotions. And they will wholeheartedly lean in when you authentically and clearly share some of the emotional parts of your story.

Always connect to the emotional perspective of the goal and then drill down to the beginning, each stage the people as well as emotions will change

Use an outline for each message that you’re attempting to convey to your audience. Get clear in your outline with the basic questions in writing: Who? What? Where? When? How? and Why? Once you’ve accomplished this, then it’s time to piece the puzzle together through connecting the dots. This connection is where you build the storyline of showing, not telling, by using details and characters that feed the story. When you skip the outline process in thorough detail, you find that you will automatically begin telling stories instead of showing the characters. Rushing through it is a great way to kill your story.
