What I find helpful with vendors is to (1) have a good cop bad cop routine; (2) regular communications to keep mowing the relationship lawn; and (3) physical dinners and other warm social touch points. Can ease so much very quickly.

Practicing radical empathy allows you to get inside the concerns of a party on the other side of a conflict. 1. Start by understanding the other party's concerns and goals. 2. Then--give them the benefit of the doubt--assume good intentions. 3. Take the money out of the equation. Ask yourself--what is fair for everyone involved? The best financial conclusions consider what is fair for both sides--what conclusion here will make the vendor feel like it's a win--and make us feel like it's a win. -- If you start with these precepts, you can make good progress going into the conversation--and then having the conversation. (Remember too that negotiations--and renegotiations--happen throughout a business process.)
I first need to disregard any preconceived notions and find a way to understand and see the vantage point of each vendor. I will often meditate to make sure I don’t find myself emotionally connected to a specific outcome because it isn’t about me. I actively listen and make sure the person I’m speaking to knows they have my full attention. I approach with a radically open mind and with deep curiosity. Eventually I ask enough questions to understand their perspective, (I don’t try to agree with it as that’s not important). Once I’ve done that on all sides, I sit with the information and strategize on ideal solutions and ways to get both parties to see what’s in it for them.

I once dealt with a guy who needed to repay us $3 million, but he was jailed for a year for doing the same thing to someone before us. When he got out, we continued our lawsuit. In the middle of it, I needed something from him and had to have a conversation with him. I knew it had 100 ways to go bad. So, I re-read the book "Bonds That Make Us Free" by Terry Warner and wrote a list of all the things that sucked for him in his life, like his wife leaving him while in jail, and ways I had made it worse, like by suing him. On our call, I started by acknowledging those things I had written on the list in my hand. He figured out I was sincere and softened. He felt seen. Ultimately, he gave me what I had been looking for that day.
Actively listen. Don’t listen to respond. Make sure you are transparent and honest, yet assertive and sometimes willing to compromise. The lowest price can cost you double when you have to re-do the job due to inadequacies and cheap materials. On the other hand; make sure you get several quotes, points of view and shop around so you can get a realistic cost and comparison between suppliers & contractors. High price doesn’t always mean great quality and craftsmanship either. As you get familiar with similar projects and costs, you will have a more concrete starting point and gain experience. Lastly, once you find a good one who does good work at a fair price. Keep him/her, because they’re not easy to find nor replace!
In my experience, understanding that my vendor is simply another person, and treating them as such, has allowed me to talk openly and honestly with them which helps builds a relationship of trust and respect. As with any relationship, proactive communication helps to reduce conflict. People can typically handle bad news better than no news. This enables Apple to meet its massive global demand and maintain the quality standards it’s known for. Also, due to the scale of Foxconn’s operations, Apple can negotiate favorable pricing, helping to maintain profit margins. 2. For Foxconn: Working with Apple provides a stable and substantial revenue stream. The prestige of being associated with a brand like Apple also enhances Foxconn’s reputation in the electronics manufacturing industry. This relationship has enabled Foxconn to grow significantly.
Always best to think what's good for both sides. It may be that you might have to be a little bit more generous (may be agree to pay 50% of the subscription fee if terminated early, or agree to negotiated early termination fees, if needed). What needs to be remembered is that everyone needs to be in business for the ecosystem to work. So, Win-Win is a must!

The one thing that works in any conflict, be it vendor or otherwise, is in-person across-the-table discussion. Most of us get caught up in writing sophisticated emails and trying phone calls; there is a different interpretation, as the tone and physiology are not visible. In an in-person discussion, you can bring all the above points into action and always be a believer that the other party also needs to resolve it; it is just a matter of how we handle it. There are always exceptions but try in-person conflict resolution meetings. IT WORKS
