How can you manage sound levels in live events to avoid noise complaints?

A casual glance at the replies here show that most folks are focused on the sound issues coming from the mains. Maybe I missed a few comments, but I didn't see anyone talking about the volume coming from THE STAGE. Stage volume with live bands is an issue that is typically beyond the control of the FOH mix, and if you want to get the vocals in the mix where they should be, you'll be fighting the levels coming from the bass amp, the drums, the guitar amps, and the keyboards. One good solution is In-Ear Monitors, and direct sends to the house. No monitor wedges blasting backwards into that residential neighborhood behind the event. Plexiglass around the drums stops those sound waves from traveling. My 2 cents.

There are many factors that can contribute to sound leaving the venue. As it pertains to large outdoor events, primary factors can include the proper aiming and alignment of a PA system. Controlling the angulature of your PA hang, and optimizing the trim height of the hang can help mitigate sound leaving the space. It is also important to ensure that your system is configured to optimize coverage. It's easy to assume that less speakers equals less volume, however in most cases, the opposite holds true. Better venue coverage with more accurate control ensures that the listening experience is ideal, while maintaining a more comfortable overall volume. Compromised coverage can lead to unreasonable levels to achieve a similar listening volume.

First things first: 1. Check the entire neighborhood for the number of Residential blocks in the event area 2. Speak to the heads of these Residential Societies and tell them about your event in detail 3. Be honest about the no. of hours you are going to play loud music/speeches / etc.. and take their honest consent in an email or WhatsApp 4. Speak to your Artist or his Manager and make them understand about the technical levels of sound pollution your city needs to adhere to 5. Tell the Artist Manager and his AV team about the decibels to be upon 6. Make sure you are using proper Sound barricading around your Event Venue

As line array systems have become the norm, system contral has been significantly improved. Properly setup a line array directs sound to the audience while rejecting sound where its not wanted. Distributed systems are also effective. Bringing the system closer to the audience means lower overall volumes. Delay speakers is a type of distributed system that can be utilized along with a line array system. A permanent outdoor venue can also utilize transportation type sound barrier walls to minimize sound extending outside the venue area.

A good place to start when planning out a live system is to look at speaker dispersion. Careful consideration of boxes and aiming can help to alleviate some of the issues with noise. Generally low frequency content is omni directional and often escapes the venue due to its longer wave lengths (e.g. thumping bass outside a club). Looking at things like cardioid sub arrays can help direct this energy to some degree, keeping it on an audience and off of problematic walls. As others have said a good engineer and a live decibel meter are also useful tools. Doing a walk around outside during a sound check can help ensure you know where you sit with any noise restrictions.

In my experience, the equipment is only as good as the technician. Do you know if your vendor invest in training? Are they certified for the sound system they are deploying? (You can check manufactures website for approved rental partners most of the time) Pre-production and using prediction tools are key. If your vendor can't show you a report on coverage and SPL levels, then they are not a good fit to solve this challenge.

Guests chatting outside during smoke breaks or after events is an often-overlooked source of noise complaints. What systems does the venue have to disperse/quiet crowds these crowds? ? Is there a qualified sound technician? Proper calibration of the equipment is key (including speaker placement and continual monitoring of sound levels). A well-calibrated production enhances clarity, at lower volumes.

Audio techs in the field use a variety of tools and techniques to optimize their systems. Software like Smaart and Sonarworks can provide accurate analytic data. In a live application we use real time analysis to visually represent the frequencies measured by a measurement microphone in the room. This data tells us how sound travels in the space, we can extrapolate information on problematic frequencies in the room, and the efficiency of how those frequencies travel in the space. Environmental factors can have an effect as well, wind speed and direction, humidity and temperature, and precipitation can all have a major impact. Once we take these factors into account, we use dynamics and processing to control and shape the sound as a whole.

While Controlling the sound and ensuring its consistency throughout the venue is essential. Depending on the environment, the tricky part would be controlling the lower frequencies from travelling outside the premise. I discussed some of these topics earlier, so I'll concentrate more on acoustics and dampening as a means of controlling the environment. Whether working in a live room or in a studio, sound will find a way to reflect off any given surface. Controlling reflections is key to any environment. In compromised scenarios, something as simple as heavy velour drape, can help deaden the reflection of sound, and can help absorb some tone. We use acoustic treatment in many scenarios to help control the harsh reverb of a room, and materials like marble or concrete can further complicate this. Carpet can help as well, but the most consistent and simple way to control acoustic reflection is to fill a room with people, a packed house doesn't reflect much!

The sound problem may not be due to sound from the venue, but from the crowds just outside the venue. The sonoric impact of crowds arriving doesn't tend to be bothersome because as individuals, the people are generally trying to be inconspicuous (as per normal). After drinks, a good show, a pep talk, meeting a hero, etc., these same people become celebratory and are therefore less likely to consider that the resting neighbours have no part in the revelry. Celebrators make a lot of noise. Possible ways to solve the problem include: - staff at the exits to remind patrons to be considerate - inside smoking areas - buffers (e.g., parking lots, land, more events) between venue & neighbours - pre-agreed upon compensation for neighbours

As an organising agency, we sometimes contend with the conflict between a client's need ("We need it louder, we more energy, etc.") and your responsibilities to regulatory authorities and a local community. My advice is to address these issues long before delivery. Ensure the client is fully apprised of your responsibilities in advance - indeed, clearly communicate that it's their shared responsibility too. Lay out the limitations in writing and explain the process by which you and your team manage these responsibilities. Trying to have this conversation in the midst of delivery will be far more challenging.

It's easy to throw money at problems, or to let money stand in the way of something really great. In all cases, it's a rewarding challenge to find low cost solutions to crippling problems. For example, imagine that negotiations with neighbours leads to the decision to staff the exits to remind folks to be quiet. FOH staff is expensive and security more so. But what if the neighbours organised themselves to staff the exits at ALL the events in their neighbourhood with their volunteers? This is a great solution for the promoter (it may even save you the cost of one or two people). And the promoter can also guarantee a certain amount of tickets to this community group; and this is likely to lead to greater sales among that demographic.
