Theory says that we have 4 types of dependencies (FS, SS, FF. SF) but theory seldom works in real project context. That doesn't mean that one should not plan, planning dependencies is crucial to understand the known dependencies, but the key is to be on top of new dependencies that emerge and existing planned dependencies go for a toss, continuous and adaptive planning along with a robust risk management process is critical for project success. Any dependency that is slipped, needs immediate addressing in terms of interim solutions so that other dependent items are not stalled, over communication and strong management support in a large org is important and having these ROBs with all the involved teams will help manage these effectively.

MS Project has very good capability to capture dependency as a tool. However, it's the managers capability to sit with the teams to find the proper dependencies and map them. If teams don't understand these properly, they will sink the sinking ship faster than filling the leak by digging on the other end of the ship , thinking that the water entered will leave from the new hole they made. In Agility, the Program Board with all sorts of dependencies can be seen visually on Miro Board. This depends on the preparation by all teams in their break out sessions. In both the cases ( MSP or Miro) the essential element is to keep it live. Else, it's used for showcasing compliance at the beginning of the ritual and really don't serve the purpose.

Create sequence diagrams to identify all the dependent systems and conversations with the teams to make sure their availability. Let's say you put the dependency and all its predecessors and successors into your schedule. You’re tracking now! But is that sufficient? What if the date comes and the deliverable is not close to completion? The schedule is blown and your project is in jeopardy. But what if you had identified the dependency's milestones? Then, you could put a series of triggers in your project schedule to confirm every milestone was achieved on time. And if the other team encountered unexpected delays, then you could take necessary action well before the dependency date.
