Communication is key. It’s not just communication on goals, priorities and roadmap that are important, but also taking time to communicate at a more personal level. Doing so allows us to bridge the gaps created in a remote environment. In non-remote settings, we may have Dave from HR who eats lunch at the same time in the break room, Ann from Legal who always hits the coffee maker at 3pm, and many others. With openness to communication nuances and plenty of dialogue opportunities, remote teams can unite despite physical barriers.

I've discovered the value of incorporating bi-weekly or monthly bonding sessions, fostering team cohesion. While face-to-face interactions are ideal, in remote settings, scheduling dedicated time facilitated by a host allows teams to enjoy and connect. In my experience, my teams and I engage in activities like playing online games such as Gartic.io, discussing weekend plans or upcoming travel ideas, and sharing stories that highlight the richness of our diverse backgrounds and cultures. 2024 will be the year of massive RTO negotiations and it's going to be interesting how the year plays out. Hybrid seems more realistic to me. For remote to work, people need to be open to different working hours to accommodate various time zones and personal commitments, as well as experimenting with new methodologies or technologies to improve efficiency and productivity. Encouraging team members to bring new ideas to the table and being open to iterative processes helps in fostering an innovative and adaptive work culture. A remote setting surely tests your management skills to its best. Below are some quick things to take care. 1. Build trust and transparency in the team. 2. Communicate clear goals to the team and define your expectations (timeline, acceptance criteria etc.) well. 3. Keep a track of your team's work through scrum meetings and PM tools. Take care not to micromanage. 4. Give your team time and space. Embrace innovation. At the same time, take care that members don't take you for granted and are accountable. The results of your team, their professional growth and their personal well-being heavily lies in your hands as a PM. Take care of your team, manage well and they shall safeguard results.
