How can you manage disruptions in a learning group?

Firstly, simplicity is key. Clearly communicate expectations and rules to the group. Think of it as setting the sail's course. Make sure everyone knows the boundaries, creating a safe and focused learning environment. Next, employ active monitoring. Keep a watchful eye on the horizon for any signs of disturbance. Just like a vigilant lookout on the ship, stay attuned to the group dynamics, anticipating potential disruptions before they swell into bigger waves. Now, let's delve into advanced tactics. Flexibility is your compass. Adapt your teaching methods to suit the group's needs. If a disruption arises, adjust your course. Maybe a change in activity or incorporating real-world examples can help calm the waters.

I think it's important to actually adhere to expected norms. A failure to do adhere and protect as agreed to can send a meeting to a chaotic, unproductive place.

Someone going 'off-topic' may well have a point that is on topic. As a facilitator, I would stay curious and ask them how their comment relates to the point we're discussing before moving on (Rather than the suggestion here to ask someone else a question)

Get to identify ring leaders of disruptions in the group and discuss with them the main cause of their attitude. Come up with a conclusive solution and share with the entire group to avoid recurrences

I would also add not to ignore the disruption, whatever the root cause. Delegates are as adults as the facilitator and addressing a disruption is sign of professionalism. Also, if the disruption come from another delegate, it needs to be acknowldged, as it impacts the experience of the other delgates in the group

For an learning group, it's important from the start to create a positive culture and agree on ways of working that are going to be helpful to the group as a well. Discuss inclusive approaches and ways of working amd be explicit about the impact. For example, if someone is disruptive it means that someone else may be hindered from participating fully which is not thr objectives. Clear objectives about the ways of working. A learner of mine used to disrupt others talking until I found out they were anxious about not remembering. I introduced post-it notes for all to capture anything as it came up for them that I created time for at the end. The learning from this was amazing- real person centred learning
