Good data acquisition requires a good understanding of the sensors, signal conditioning and analog to digital hardware. 1. What do the sensors sense? The measured parameter is most often converted by the sensor or signal conditioner into voltage but milliamps are also common, typically 4-20 mA. 2.0 Analog to digital converters (ADC) are essential. They MUST have suitable anti-aliasing filters regardless of the dynamic range of the signal. High frequency noise is radiated by most electrical devices and can be picked up by instrumentation lines, signal conditioners (which can also add noise).

In my view, one should be clear what is ultimate outcome required and for what purpose for the selection of sensors, measuring devices , data acquisition system, report generation tool …etc. The environment conditions is key factor for selection e.g. temperature, humidity, dust, vibration…… . The person who is responsible for the operation of the equipment or process must be part of team .

In some cases, the signal from the sensors may require conditioning to improve its quality or make it compatible with the ADC. Signal conditioners can amplify, filter, or convert the signal to a suitable level or format for further processing.

The technology widely available in this hyperconnected and Industry 4.0 world allows for cost efficient collection of data. Effectively any transducer is viable for digitisation, even those not currently connected to PLCs or Scada solutions thanks to bolt on Remote I/O modules. The data can be in any format over any time line and moderated and managed within a myriad of On Prem or Cloud based solutions. Data is nothing without the definition of how you intend to use it.

When storing data, it's important to consider the format, structure, and compression techniques. Choosing a standardized format like CSV, JSON, or Parquet can ensure compatibility with various analysis and visualization tools. Additionally, optimizing data structures and using compression techniques can help reduce storage costs and improve data retrieval performance.

Consider some simple Cloud based solutions too, AWS and Snowflake to name but a few. A simple upload and even use of preselected algorithms can aid your speed of implementation and potentially give you tangible results quickly. Built in AI can begin to even predict scenarios based on your automatic uploads. The largest question still remains, what do you need to report on and what do you need to see from data outputs.

The choice of tools for data analysis depends on various factors, including the complexity of the analysis, the size of the dataset, and the skills and preferences of the analysts. Spreadsheets like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets can be useful for basic data exploration and visualization. Statistical software such as R or Python libraries like Pandas and NumPy provide more advanced analytical capabilities. Programming languages like R or Python offer extensive libraries and frameworks for data analysis. Additionally, machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence models can be applied to extract insights and patterns from the data.

Clean data by removing outliers and imputing missing values. Transform and validate through normalization and cross-validation. Ensure quality by detecting anomalies and regularly updating models.

My personal choice for data acquisition and analysis is National Instruments LabView. It's easy to learn, has a full suite of analysis tools, generating a professional GUI is simple. Plus with NI hardware it is a good candidate for equipment and/or process control.

Depending on the purpose and use of the data, the data should be reliable to avoid misinterpretation which will lead to wrong decision making. Have accurate reading and counter check with standard ideal reading to get information of the current status.

What kind of data acquisition, what program will be used, how it will be analyzed, quantified, and what the feedback will be, depends a lot on the size of the work being performed, for whom it is being performed, and what the purpose is.

If it's hardware, software, or the networking infrastructure delivering the data, there needs to be preventative and corrective maintenance scheduled concurrently with the collection of information. Definitive roles should be established and adhered to with actual consequences for internal breaches of protocol. Everyone cannot have access to everything but it is always good to explain the process and stakes to all personnel. Helping everyone understand how their role effects the data and subsequently the decisions made because of the data gives a full circle of responsibility and inclusion to the process.

Every personnel needs to understand and know the data flow from acquiring, analysing and storing. Yes, we need specific and specialised individuals with the official responsibilities of data flow to avoid improper decision making which may cause harm, failure or downtime.
