First and foremost, I think it is very important to keep in mind that you are dealing with another human being who has feelings, particularly when it comes to an interviewing situation where they are being judged and their ego and self-respect are at stake. Finding out what someone’s desired work life balance is early in the interview is important, many roles do not adhere to a 9-5 schedule and certain schedules may not work for someone. In addition, I support a hybrid work environment as it provides a lot of flexibility while still allowing employers to have important face time with team members and should be considered where possible.

While this may be unorthodox, if I am screening a candidate or interviewing a candidate and I can tell they are not right for the role, I will share that right then and there. For example, I recently interviewed a candidate who said she prefers working for someone who can mentor her on some of the technical aspects of the role she is less comfortable with. The role, however, requires someone who is an expert and can run the show without a lot of direction. I shared that with her and told her I would not be moving her forward. It is a risk to be that direct, but it feels like the right thing to do.

At a minimum, set up your disposition process to send a response to each candidate not selected, and for candidates pre-screened or interviewed, send a personal email.
