In simple terms, it keeps the wrong folks out, ensuring only the right ones touch your code and data. Imagine if you don't have access control: It leaves your pipeline vulnerable to unauthorized access, data breaches, and unregulated changes. This is fundamental aspect noone can ignore.

Use robust authentication mechanisms to ensure that only authenticated users or systems can access the CI/CD pipeline. Implement proper authorization mechanisms to control what actions each authenticated user or system can perform. 2. Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): Define roles with specific permissions and assign these roles to individuals or groups. Examples of roles might include developers, testers, release managers, and administrators.

As one who has been doing access control since the beginning of IAM, Role Based Access Control (RBAC) is usually the first topic to support access control. While I fundamentally agree, RBAC is an excellent method to drive access control policies, it creates an apathy towards security. Dynamic RBAC, or Attribute Based Access Control (ABAC), is yet another method to provide access control policies. ABAC is certainly a better approach, as the controls are more fluid, but really is dependent upon the attributes utilized. Unfortunately, this can also become an apathetic or unyielding. Policy Based Access Control (PBAC) is the next evolution, but ONLY if context is provided!

Start with the principle of least privilege (PoLP). Give users and roles the minimum permissions they need to get the job done—no more, no less. This enhances security and reduces the risk of unintended consequences.

Define you access control policy upon the least privilege principle but bear in mind if too few people have the authority of triggering a deployment the whole purpose of automation is somewhat defeated. If an emergency path need to be deployed, but only a specific manager can hit go and that person is absent it doesn't make a lot of sense. Role-based access control can make sense if you are able to differentiate a same person in different roles across projects which might reflect a real-world scenario.

In my book, we explore defining access control policies with a focus on: Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): Assigns roles for authorization, adhering to Segregation of Duties (SoD) and Least Privilege (PoLP) principles. Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC): Extends RBAC by incorporating attributes for dynamic, context-specific control. Implementing access control tools like Okta involves setting up an Okta account, integrating CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins) with Okta for authentication, defining user groups and policies, enabling multi-factor authentication, automating user provisioning/deprovisioning, monitoring user activities, and providing user training and support. Okta streamlines user management, ensures security compliance, and allows granular control over permissions, enhancing overall CI/CD pipeline security.

The nature of CI/CD generally does not change dynamically, in that context RBAC could be the first choice. If there is need to have more granular dynamically changing CI/CD access patterns, example certain time of the day, IP, region etc. ABAC backed by policy could be the right approach. For both the approaches auditing can be achieved through right even generation.

OPA is great: Broad Application: Adapts to various data formats and environments, including microservices and serverless workloads. Cloud-Native Integration: Ensures compliance, integrating smoothly with cloud-native platforms. Serverless Policy Enforcement: Effective in serverless architectures for policy application. Kubernetes Admission Control: Integrates with Kubernetes for enhanced policy management. Infrastructure as Code Validation: Works with tools like Terraform for compliance in resource provisioning. OPA is excellent for robust policy enforcement in cloud-native settings, ensuring security and compliance. The regulated industries have strict compliance rules hence the tooling should match the enterprise security and compliance requirements. Though most cloud native tools claim compliance but tooling should be audited by an external entity to ensure the implementation matches the expectations. Most customers have tools but the implementation and acceptance of the tool, sometimes modifying culture of practices is where most enterprises face challenges.

To monitor and audit access control, enable the logging service. For example w.r.t AWS Cloud, one can utilize AWS CloudTrail for logging access-related actions. Define monitoring policies, centralize logs in CloudWatch Logs, and regularly review them for anomalies or unauthorized access. Configure alerts for real-time notifications, automate compliance checks with AWS Config Rules, and generate auditable reports. Control access to logs, ensuring only authorized personnel can analyze access control data.

This depends on the product/tool used of course. Using an external tool to gather logs will require extra (security) setup but might be considered useful in some cases. Using the log functionality of the tool itself might simplify implementation. I.e. GitLab has powerful logging capabilities thus avoiding to use an external tool. Whichever solution you choose, probably the worst advice would be to say "set it and forget it". Logs are there to be monitored, audited and alerted upon. You will want/need to alert in real-time upon job activities, monitor continuously the system as a whole and periodically audit your system (logs).

Consider using automated tools and scripts to analyze large volumes of data efficiently. Ensure that your alerts and notifications are finely tuned to capture only significant events, reducing alert fatigue. Lastly, create customizable reports and dashboards that highlight key access control metrics and trends for informed decision-making.

Access control practices should evolve with your pipeline. Regularly assess and update your policies to align with changing requirements and emerging threats. Automate as much as possible to reduce human error and save time. Consider periodic penetration testing to evaluate the effectiveness of your access control.

I'm going to add one word that will sum up my experience. Governance! Properly managed and applied governance is how it will be improved. To add an adjective - Automated Governance!

For instance, assign 'Developer' role granting access to repositories, while 'Admin' role manages pipeline configurations. Regularly review and update permissions, leverage AAD's Conditional Access for contextual policies, and implement MFA for added security. Automate user provisioning/deprovisioning via AAD, ensuring timely access adjustments as roles change or employees leave, strengthening overall access management.

To monitor and audit access control activities, it's essential to use tools and frameworks that enable the evaluation of security controls and policy enforcement. Implementing dashboards that highlight security controls in use and their enforcement status is a practical approach. These dashboards can also display security defects over time, providing a clear view of the security posture

Keys to the kingdom or root access to any tools should follow twin officer method. SWIFT, the payment network implements this by defining a left and right security officer. In order for the most secure keys to be compromised both security officers must go rogue. It also protects enterprises from one of them leaving the company abruptly and thus the keys etc.

Consider user awareness training for security protocols, robust monitoring/logging practices, regular audits, encryption for data protection, an incident response plan, evaluating third-party integrations' security, up-to-date patch management, and fostering inter-team collaboration. These measures, alongside RBAC and automation, fortify access control, enhancing overall security resilience.

In my experience, giving the development team full control risks configurations (via CD/CI) drifting from security best practices over time, while imposing overly strict rules hampers velocity. Managing access control through CD/CI is a great idea, but it increases the critical attack surface area. Internal or external threats could lead to taking full control if the separation of controls is not appropriately implemented. We set up the pipeline tooling to integrate with internal identity and access mechanisms. Multi-factor authentication ensured only authorized personnel could access critical functions. For extra protection regarding configuration errors, we required peer code reviews before committing pipeline alterations.
