If you can't do that, your story is not as strong as it could be. Building a story is a process. You can't just rely on inspiration. In many cases, you won't be able to do it in one sitting. You work and refine the story. I have found that taking a break away from a story always helps. When I come back to it, I can see the weaknesses. For instance, I'm rewriting a novel. I realized that I was too attached to certain ideals. And that affected my narrative structure. After a break, I can see how to make the story more fun. Take a break!

Uniformity is the enemy. Uniformity of sentence length. Uniformity of sentence structure. Uniformity of paragraph length. Uniformity of word choice. The more your sentences and paragraphs look just like the previous ones, the more likely your reader is to check out. Uniformity is easy to identify visually, and it's even easier to identify by sound, though the latter WILL make you cringe. You should make it impossible for the audience to read your work in a flat, monotone voice. The more varied your structure and the more colorful your language, the harder it'll be to read your work like Squidward (or Stanley Hudson, if The Office is more your speed). Don't let the reader be Stanley...unless maybe it's angry Stanley. DID I STUTTER?!

Sometimes people just want another human being to share their experience. They don't want to know the percentages, the averages, and the means. Even when you do use data, don't make your whole presentation about numbers. Instead, use the numbers to support the story - that's what matters. As a consumer, I don't care about statistics. But if you tell me how someone like me impressed their spouse, I might be interested. Good marketers know that, in the end, humans are about relationships. And stories can convey relationships better than pie charts can.
I've learned that telling stories using data without being able to visualize the data means that you actually need several smaller stories that fit together to show how *this thing* works. For example, you have a small story about the problem or the goal - the reason why you chose to gather this data to begin with. Then there's a small story in what you originally found in the data, and first impressions, but with a few questions that you still need to uncover answers to. And then you explore those questions to uncover those answers, and share a unique insight from that discovery. Finally, you tell me what to do with this information. Altogether, the framework provides an interesting story that people will spend time reading.
