How can you make your grading practices more transparent?

I think for me every student is having capabilities according to their personalities so for me the grading will be 30% based on the practical exposure or innovation 20% based on classroom conduct and participation in activities 20% Class Tests 30% Mid/End Term Exams.

I like to give my students a chance to get to know the evaluation criteria & answer all the questions they may have. I have scanned work from former students (anonymized, of course) with examples of how I graded their work. I give them examples from students who got great results and go all the way to those who got poor marks. Rubrics can be perceived as an abstract by some students, and learning by doing is something I promote. I may also give them two short stories, for example, and give them a rubric to evaluate them in groups & have them compare their evaluation to other groups. Knowing the rubrics increases confidence when asking me why I graded something a certain way & they can advocate for themselves much better.

The criteria for marking needs to be linked to the course objectives and learning outcomes, and the level the students are taught at. There needs to be a match between what you teach, what you want people to learn and how you verify that that has been achieved. For instance if you want them to know a theory, you'll verify whether they can recognize or describe it correctly. If you want the students to apply a model, you'll need to assess whether they know the model first (recognize/describe), whether they can reproduce it to a given situation. Bloom's taxonomy is useful here.

I am all up for sharing your assignment type and marking criteria at the start of the course. That helps make the link from desired learning outcomes, teaching methods and assessment methods and criteria. What is useful in this context is to reiterate as well to the students what the basic requirements of their level of study is - for a BA student recognition, reproduction and comprehension might be sufficient but for an MA student it is the application and critique that is important.

Donner en amont le calendrier des évaluations est une excellente fa?ons d'aider les élèves à s'y projeter. La planification est une bonne illustration de la méthode et du raisonnement de l'enseignant. Dans le même temps celà valorise à terme la progression de l'élève.

One of the best ways is to center grading around an agreed upon rubric. As a teacher, offer students your rubric template and they can collectively improve it. Early in the school year, show them how to use the rubric and examples of what good work looks like. Finally, have students grade group projects using said rubrics when possible. These practices improve transparency and making grade more efficient for teachers.
