My experience in this area suggests that the Enterprise Data Architecture (EDA) should be built upon, 1) Domain-Driven Design principles: this makes architecture modular, pluggable, portable, secure and close to business (ubiquitous language) 2) Interoperability should be by design and not an afterthought: To achieve this, ensure that the data architecture adhere's to industry standards for that business domain, e.g. in Telco it is TMF, in healthcare it is FHIR, etc. This will ensure any acquisitions, mergers and demergers, and innovations are seamless and scalable. 3) Create a pool of citizen data architects. Embed them in all areas of Business, BA, EA, SA, Engg, Testing, PM, etc, to democratise the EDA.

One thing I've found helpful is to evaluate the architecture from multiple views to have a holistic perspective of the range of issues and opportunities. Stakeholder's objectives should be translated into architecture to increase architecture’s life.
