Above all, realize and embrace the fact that "#ONLY the #FUTURE is #MANAGEABLE." Why is this so? You can't manage the #Past. It is over and done with. All you can do is modify a previous decision with a new one, sometime from now. But you can't manage the #Present. It is a fleeting nanosecond of time as we constantly enter the #Future. Therefore, management is about managing what hasn't happened yet! Hence you must always stay future focused, anticipate change, and make every decision such that it will optimize future outcomes. Communicate this -- along with your Vision, Mission, and Strategy -- and you will create a unified "Managing the Future" #team #mindset and employee-wide culture to achieve and celebrate collaborative success.

2 Empower your team

Another way to make a positive impact is to empower your team to perform at their best. This means providing them with the resources, support, and feedback they need to succeed. It also means delegating tasks and responsibilities appropriately, trusting them to make decisions, and giving them autonomy and ownership of their work. With the trend to blend positions and increase workload, employees often feel the pressure to just keep up. Their eye is on the next deadline, so their minds are in the weeds of specific tasks. I think it's important for managers to create time throughout the year for employee development. Whether it's slotting time for employees to continue learning, get coaching help, or individually meet with their team members, these actions will identify and gauge their intended career path so their manager can mentor and help develop their talents to meet their professional goals.

As a manager, you should strive to be the most professionally developed individual in the room. Your influence of the work environment, and your degree of responses to different situations will dictate the largest portion of the perception of your management skills. We all have a role to play in creating positive work environments. Continously developing your soft skills is important to do for everybody, but for managers it's a necessity!

Another way to make a positive impact is to build positive and constructive relationships with your team, your peers, your superiors, and your customers. This means showing respect, empathy, and appreciation, listening actively and attentively, and giving and receiving feedback constructively. It also means resolving conflicts and issues diplomatically, collaborating and cooperating with others, and networking and building rapport. By doing this, you can foster a culture of trust, teamwork, and customer satisfaction, as well as enhance your influence and reputation.

It is crucial that when professionals are promoted from their task-based positions to management positions, there is a readiness to manage people. I think there is room to bridge this gap in terms of ensuring a manager has sufficient training in effective communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, and understanding how to effectively motivate individuals based on their personality. While in a corporate setting, I witnessed promotions because someone excelled at their task-based job. However, what was lacking was the preparation of that employee to 'manage people'. The lens companies should look through for managers is one where that person can grow and excel at the human component of a company.

Want to celebrate your success? Don't just go with the standard, cliché pizza party. This isn't the end of the elementary school year for some small kids. These are valued and respected employees who worked their bottoms off to get the organization to where it is today. Show some class, roll up your sleeves, and put in some effort! Get with corporate to get a budget for something really nice. The best I've seen was an all-expenses-paid weekend resort for all of the employees. Too expensive? Imagine losing all those employees, and you'll see how expensive that gets. Every cost can be justified with the right perspective.
