It is crucial to have a Parent-Teacher Conference. My most of the students' Parents do not understand English very well. I prefer to talk in the their native language or call an interpretator for the smooth communication. We can also get the help of AI tool and Google to translate for us.

In India, and I am assuming in most multilingual countries, the concern is not limited to parents not knowing or not being fluent in English but may also not be very comfortable with the language in which school's usually teach or the medium of instruction. The onus of clear communication in this case, according to me is on the teachers. We need to learn the basics of the home language of the students. Sometimes having group based interactions may be a good idea. A teacher can communicate the overall coverage, achievements and challenges of the class and the parents can also interact about it with each other.

Unfortunately, teacher-parent conferences could be useless if the parents cannot communicate with the teacher. The teacher may use visuals such as sheets and work samples, but such conferences are organized for a purpose beyond that. We don't meet them so we can simply show them work but to discuss what these sheets and papers indicate, and in cases, how to improve performance or tackle the challenges identified through the work shown. The parents themselves may have suggestions, complaints, or just praise to express. In a previous experience teaching in Malaysia, we solved this by hiring volunteers who can step up when called to translate for these parents.
