Type safety is really important to prevent crashing of apps. Let's say, there is a function which accepts two parameters and returns the difference of two. The programmer expected that the function will always receive numeric values. But take a scenario where a user enters string values and passes it to the function (as he does not know what type of value is acceptable), this will cause certain errors and can also lead to crashing the apps. To prevent this we use type checking in programming languages like I used to code in javascript but due to type checking, I switched to typescript which has better type checking and helps us write better code. There are several ways we can use to check types in javascript itself like "use strict".

To my experience, In generic programming, firstly the main purpose is to reuse the same class/method with different types, depending on what type of values we are utilising generic class/ method for. In non-generic way, if we are using a class to make a collection for the purpose of arithmetical calculation, and add different types of values ( 1 ,"AB", 1.5, true), it works fine when compile the program, however at the runtime it throws exception, because of the different type of value being calculated. So, by using generic type, we have to have the specific type(int/string/etc.) to be added while creating a class/method, in order to be confident that we are using the type-safe parameter. Other benefit is to say: "Getting Early Errors"

Type annotations are also known as type signatures and are used to indicate the datatypes of variables and input/outputs of functions and methods. Many programming language requires to explicitly state datatype of variables to avoid run time errors like C++, Java. Static typing is optional in Python, however its possible to introduce it gradually (this is known as gradual typing). With gradual typing, you can choose to specify the portion of your code that should be dynamically or statically typed. One can use mypy (a optional static type checker) with type hints (consider type hints as comments) to achieve this.
