How can you maintain team morale while working remotely?

While working remotely has created efficiencies and increased productivity , it can create silos, with team members barely knowing each other. Besides non work collaboration over the cooler or coffee machine are lost. There is a need for informal sessions online with the entire team- similar to the "lunch and learn" we do a monthly "lunch and laugh" with online games on Teams. If there is an opportunity to meet in person socially monthly or at work once week, that too helps the morale with something to look fwd to.

I provide a support system decided upon by the team to ensure I get their by-in. The system helps monitor hurdles, and progress. I also allow flexibility and only require that we commit to delivering a quality output, making time for our meetings and meeting our deadlines.

Working remotely but attaining desired Results would require setting up of goals on a day-to-day basis, and,a review of the progress on a weekly basis. This continuous communication will keep the chord between the leader and its team alive. However, progress should be viewed on a weekly basis to let the team work stress-free, without the fear of a daily report card to be presented. Although, the interaction and doubt-clearing channel should always remain open. Moreover, a true leader has to lead from the front, hence, by the end of the week the leader should himself be ready with alternate solutions to a problem, which could be shared with the team, if the need arises. The motivation quotient would remain constant this way.

By forming teams and giving them activities together, this will help them cooperate with each other and give them a greater passion for working together

Autonomy and accountability go together in my opinion. The sense of responsibility over the work without the proper flexibility and trust on the employees leads to lower morale and satisfaction. Whenever the nature of the work allows flexible hours, location etc, it will happen. Better acknowledge it, empower team members and assess deliverables.

Although the aforementioned are all legitimate and valid however, in my opinion the key element is; - Selecting right person to the right job; because once you have the right person for the job only then you can trust him with independent decisions and equip him with adequate resources. Else it will result in a huge set back to the project. - Additionally, owning the team and giving the autonomy for independent decisions is good for collaborative growth and healthy work environment however, in many cases it may severely effect the hirarchy of organisation and result is a huge loss to the organisation. Thus, a third hand check should me maintained while trusting the team members for independent decisions.

It may create a comfortable work environment, increasing job satisfaction and overall well-being.However remote work can despite gamut of advantages can result in isolation, and infuse lethargy ,with poor health conditions. It can kill the interface, social ties and disturb milieu with the organisations.Regular interface, communication and virtual team-building activities are missed which are required for team spirit.
