The pump must also be observed for the type of fluid it pumps, its runtime, operating conditions, alignment, and condition of shafts. Not all seals are suitable for certain rules, and it is upto the engineer and the mechanical fitter/technician to check the conditions and find the right seal for it.

Once the seal is ready to be set, the spacing and the shaft must be inspected to ensure that the seal fits perfectly and is not damaged during installation. Seals require some effort to be set and may not fit easily, so instead of impacting, a seal driver must be used to ensure even setting of seal. If leakages persist, they may need to reanalyse seal design, whether it is fit for that purpose. Pumps may also be the reason for, otherwise, applicable seals to run out due to improper alignment and pump upkeep, operating conditions,etc. Sometimes, as observed, seals, after an initial leakage, may set themselves perfectly during initial operations. It should also be ensured that the seal springs are set right and are not overly exerted during installation/operations.

The person operating the pump is the first stakeholder for this. It is them that must monitor regularly for leakages, sounds, or anything abnormal during operations, including the pump itself for cavitation or shaft damage. Similarly, Mean Time to Repair and Mean Time Between Failure must also be recorded to check how long seals last.

Seal environment can be improved by ensuring that the pump is properly maintained, the fluid flowing is able to be withstood by the seal, and the seal replacement procedures be improved. Fluid should also be free of any solids inside of it to avoid abrasions. Pump must also be lubricated to ensure smooth operations, which in turn improves seal life. Vibrations must also be eliminated as much as possible.
