One way to stay connected with contacts is to send greetings on their birthday, special events, or work anniversaries. I call to celebrate some of my contacts whenever they post any achievement. I frequently send personal chats to those who can provide reference letters for me. I received a request for a reference letter from a mentee whom I haven't communicated with in over six months. I feel that it is not appropriate to wait so long before communicating. After receiving a greeting of "Hi, how are you?" from some of my mentees and colleagues, I often receive a request for a reference letter within a few hours. I don't think that is the appropriate way to keep our contacts. Remember to say hi even when you need nothing from me.
