I have some questions: The headline assumes that relationship becomes unhealthy. Is there any data or study to prove so? Is the promotion at same level as the mentor? Meaning are mentor and mentee now peers? Please clarify the dynamics. :-)

What if after a promotion your mentor is now reporting to you? It may sound awkward, but it really isn't. You both have the same value before and after the promotion. You are worth from your inside, not from your new role's name. Therefore, if you keep a caring respect for your mentor, you will value him regardless if he's unemployed.
