As organisations grow, their ability to define clear roles can increase exponentially, and many have invested considerable time and resource creating role definitions only for them to collapse under complexity and organisation change. Taking a 'top-down' approach, allows organisations to start defining roles with broader categories, with individuals holding multiple roles that combine (as allowed by policy!) to provide a more "emergent" role model that supports more flexibility. This model can be refined over time, allowing more benefit to automation, while still maintaining the flexibility for exceptions (enabling 'toxic' combinations under specific and controlled conditions such as cover or handover) and future growth.
