How can you leverage your network and mentors to support your career development and learning opportunities?

When I start working with leaders on "networking" the biggest roadblocks are feeling like you need permission to reach out to anyone, and trying to avoid rejection. We tend to feel the need for permission because we are looking to take something from the person or lack confidence in our own value. If instead, we approach networking with the mindset of being curious and learning about the other person, all of a sudden networking becomes easier, and the idea of rejection disappears.

Networking is crucial for career development and job search success, involving online and offline connections, strong communication skills, and personal branding. Setting clear goals and targeting appropriate individuals can expand professional networks.

Professional associations like ISPI, IIBA, and PMI can be great starting points to build your network. Most have local chapters, virtual events, volunteer opportunities, and conferences where you can connect with others in your field and build relationships.

To build and maintain a network for career development, start by clarifying your goals and identifying key professionals and organizations. I attend industry events, conferences, seminars, and networking gatherings to make connections. Leverage online platforms like LinkedIn and participate in webinars and online courses. Build genuine relationships by being authentic and offering value to others. Stay connected with regular check-ins and celebrate achievements. Seek mentorship and offer to mentor others. Join and volunteer in professional organizations. I do this with the OD Network, other associations, and local Chambers. Stay informed by reading industry publications and sharing knowledge. Engage and participate in internal groups.

Developing in one’s career is multifaceted. Yet, leveraging one’s network and mentors for career development can be quite effective. It involves actively seeking their advice, using their recommendations for skill-building resources, and exploring opportunities they suggest and share. Regular insights and feedback from them can enhance personal growth, while their introductions to others can expand one’s professional circle. Overcome networking jitters by leaning into doing it; it’s worth it! Consider doing it with others. Mentors can also advocate for your career advancement and serve as role models. Maintain open communication, be proactive, and reciprocate support to strengthen these relationships.

A mentor is only as good as how much you are a mentee. Make sure to spend the time investing in your relationships in order to help them flourish, show your seriousness, and make the most of their wisdom.

Finding the right mentor means seeking out individuals whose experience and expertise align with your career goals. Approach potential mentors with a clear vision of what you’re looking to achieve and a willingness to listen and learn. Engaging with mentors isn’t just about asking for advice—it's about fostering a relationship that pushes you toward growth and keeps you accountable.

Look for opportunities beyond your organization and immediate field. Engage in learning activities which stretch your understanding of others.

The more you intentionally immerse yourself in the fields you want to network in, the more chances you have to connect with others. Take a look at your week, how much time have you spent in the area you want to grow in and how much of that time was with others that want the same?

Whether through formal education, conferences, or self-directed learning, staying open to new ideas and skills is critical to long-term success. Seek out opportunities that challenge your comfort zone and align with your career ambitions. If opportunities don’t readily present themselves, be proactive in creating them—organize workshops, suggest new projects, or volunteer for initiatives that broaden your expertise.

The number one way to learn is to teach and that also means to do something with what you learned. The moment something captures your attention from a learning perspective try to find one way to implement that in your life right now. Avoid trying to implement too many things at once. This isn't a race, and the more you try to do the less you'll accomplish.

Why Experienced persons are more valuable to most firms than newcomers? In my opinion, Firms want to use their experiences as leverage to learn new ways to tackle pre-existing problems. On the other hand, the experienced guy learns about new hurdles, gains more experience enhances his abilities and skills, and has an impact on his presence in the firm. By sharing experiences and applying learning, Experience Guy supports his career development and at the same time learns about new opportunities, and skills and grooms himself professionally. In summary, experienced individuals bring a unique set of skills, knowledge, and perspectives to the workplace, making them invaluable assets to firms seeking to stay ahead.

When you fail, and you will, extract as many learnings out of the experience. AND give yourself kudos for pushing out at your edges. This is where we find some of our deepest learnings.

Keep data points and reflect on progress regularly. How many people did you reach out to? How many people did you connect with? Who do you need to follow-up with? What's working and what's not? These are important questions to consistently improve your strategies and ensure you're spending your time wisely.

By connecting with individuals who share similar interests and passions, you can uncover potential opportunities. It's essential to locate the platforms where these like-minded individuals gather, such as specialized networking platforms. Introducing yourself and articulating how collaborating with these individuals can enhance your pursuits is crucial. Remember to honor their time and priorities, striving for a mutually beneficial outcome.
