How can you leave a cold call voicemail that gets a response?

The significant majority of cold calls end in no answer, which means voicemails. So getting good at using the voicemail as a means to an end (getting a response) is a pretty big deal. Almost all companies use some kind of VoIP for their phones, and almost all VoIPs transcribe voicemails to text and deliver it as an email to the owner. So think of the voicemail like a voice-to-text touch point that is intended to set up your next message. Answer two simple questions: 1) Why is this person calling me? 2) Why should I care? Instead of looking for a call back, tee up the incoming email you'll send after the voicemail.

Voicemails should be concise and under 35 secs. Many drone on, unclear what they are talking about, different every time, etc. and get deleted. Formula; who I am/company (name only, no one cares about your title,) who we work with, and what I want to ask you, your number. Write out your voicemail, leave it for yourself and ask "would I call ME back?" Fine-tune it, use that version every time. 3 versions for X called. Don't over-inform or push a lot of info. You likely won't get a call back, BUT do it right and they will recall your name and topic. People aren't going to do the work to schedule their own sales call without active interest, so don't expect a return but DO use it to make an imprint and achieve progress in the account.

If I do not get an answer, I will not leave a voicemail I will just move on to the next dial. I can cover more calls in a shorter time, voicemails are rarely listened to especially if they are not expecting your call. It's best to catch them on the phone live.

30 sec - ads that have big impact are expressed time over time in 30 sec. it is content of the message that gives it value for someone's attention. I agree "know your goal" write your 'leave behind message' with your intent. Practice and be confident. Know you are not going to waste their valuable time. You are calling them because you know what you have to share will be of value to them but it is up to them to act or not.

Keep things ultra short, direct, and informal. "Hey Mike, Belal at Trinet here. It looks like you (whatever they handle). Not sure if this is of interest, but we (value prop). I'll shoot you an email about it with subject line Belal's voicemail."

If you're spending 30 seconds after each unanswered call to leave a voicemail and making 60 unanswered calls per day you could be wasting upwards of 2 hours per week. Not because voicemails aren't a valuable touchpoint... but because there's a better way. Learn if your VoIP provider has a 'voicemail drop' feature. Pre-record the perfect voicemails for certain steps in your outbound sequence and have them sent to an unresponsive prospect with one click. Many people won't pick up a call from a unrecognized phone number but they will listen to a voicemail, even if it's just to get rid of that nagging new voicemail notification.

Less is more. Again the voicemail will most likely be transcribed, and you want it to read like a text message from a friend. - It's me at... - I noticed you... - Not sure, but would this be of interest... - Look for an email from me shortly...

Never, ever expect buyers to call you back from voicemail. I'm not saying it never happens, but it's such low probability. Again, voicemails are not for call backs, they just tee up your next touch point. Keep the voicemail focused on the email you send afterwards, which may include a short video, link, etc.

A lot of people think voicemail is dead, and I hate to break it to you, but there are still plenty of people who listen to them. I booked two meetings from voicemails just this week alone. Keep it clear, and short, and be aware of your tone. When was the last time you heard your own voice? Do you sound friendly? Engaged? Or are you reading or reciting the same voicemail script over and over? People notice and respond accordingly.

Especially clear - most read the voicemail rather than listen to it. Make sure your contact details are clearly spoken for the scribe to capture it accurately.

Tone matters, because believe it or not there are still folks out there checking their voicemails. But speak in a tone like you're texting a friend. It should feel like "Hey, you might wanna check this out..." That's the key. Whether they listen or simply scan the VoIP generated transcription, it'll stand out from other communications.

It is very important to sound like a real person and not someone that has been trained to say something. If that means that you professionally introduce yourself differently than the top sales person in your company that is ok. Your personality goes a long way towards earning trust at the beginning of the call, which is the most important. Also, make a champion out of the “gatekeeper.” A lot of times they are trusted to be the gatekeeper because they are more heavily involved in the business than you may know. Most importantly, have fun with it! Be inquisitive and ask questions. Questions will tell you what your prospect wants and how to sell them. Learn as much as you can your the prospect, while being yourself.

One shortcut is to say “Hey (prospect name) its (Your first name). Give me a call back!” Then leave your phone number. You’ll get tons of returned calls. You’d better be REALLY good when they do call you back though. There’s a good chance they’ll be annoyed.

How many of you leave your phone number in the message? I ask as most phones display the number. Skipping this step saves time.
