How can you learn multiple programming languages?

It depends on what your circumstances are. In my case I had no one to guide me. I started learning Ruby and became a PHP developer. It took me years to move over to a Javascript Engineer while I had extensive experience working with Nodejs. If you can, choose a language that you love. If you do not love what you do, the job is going to suck. Also look at what jobs are in high demand. If you learn a language no one uses then it ends up being an expensive hobby. My post is geared for people who have limited finances and opportunities and want to change their lives through coding.

Don't focus on multiple languages, focus on multiple programming paradigms and verticals. For example, learning an imperative language and a functional language will expand your thinking more than learning 3 imperative languages. Also, having demonstrable experience working across tech stacks will be more useful for the marketplace.

Based on my personal path, starting out in one of the fundamental languages like Java, C++, C, C# e.t.c. will make it easier for someone to transition to another programming language later on.Sooner or later, one will realize that all languages share the same basic fundamentals and therefore, easier to pick and use a different programming language at any point. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

In my experience, I already knew C# and it helped me with understanding of SOLID principles and also object oriented programming (OOP), I am talking mainly for the backend development side. I started my job and I had to work on Angular for an urgent task in which I found out typescript was just like C#, after that I mostly just learn the basic syntax of any language and read documentations whenever I am stuck. I think being a Full Stack Developer JavaScript is a must language to learn. To learn a language I would suggest to just learn the syntax of a given language and then start building sample projects which would help you excel at it.

At first, try with the language that lets you get familiar with memory management(C,C++) along with programming paradigms. Then you can get along with Python or Ruby or Java or JS depends on what you want to build.

One of the best basic example can be To draw a diamond using an asterisk. - constraints of using only 2 loops could be any. - continuely prompt the user to enter any odd number. In case of an even number again prompt for a new number for Infinite time until you get an odd numb. - as you get an odd number draw diamond accordingly. * * * * * * * * *

You need to start with the basics. I mean you ned to have a very strong foundation about the languages before jumping into frameworks, because if you don't understand the basics, you won't be able to modify or create anything with the language.

Try with one language at a time, get familiar with programming syntax and most importantly how to implement your thought process in computer programming. Also focus on how a particular topic works(e.g: loops). Write atleast 4-5 programs until you get familiar and feel confident enough at the same time.

Another way to get started is to implement an interpreter for another language. Try for example to write a REPL in your favourite language for a LISP. Implementing a simple parser would give insight on how the targeted language works.

I think this is true when you're starting out, but once you've learned a c-style language, picking up other c-style languages is generally pretty easy. The basics don't change much from language to language. Again, for me, it's the excitement at building something - so I generally look at some examples to get an idea of the language's syntax, then dive right in to what I want to build and take a step back as needed to learn language specifics. That said, if I'm learning for academic reasons, just to broaden my repertoire, or a long-term position, then I will learn as much about the language as I can by building various starter apps and studying the specifics.

I think you need to do this before even starting to learn a programming language. You need to compare languages of your interest in terms of their paradigms, uses, learning pace, performance, portability, and so many other features.

Yes, after you've learned your 2nd C-style language, if you haven't already noticed the similarities and differences between the first, this is a great idea. I was able to make connections by doing this as I learned my 2nd language and it really advanced the speed at which I was able to pick it up and helped deepen my understanding of both languages.

One thing I found helpful was comparing how much they are similar and different from each other. This can help help you to weigh how much effort you require the need to jump from one language to another. For eg, I found jumping from Ruby to Python relatively easy as they were similar, While the fundamental of Golang was different It required some time.

One should never forget that the goal of learning programming languages is to solve a task through some code. It makes sense to start with a small project that can evolve into something huge and practical, such as a to-do list or a webshop. When faced with a specific problem, it’s more effective to search for that task rather than attempting to learn everything in theory with the hope of applying it all.

When you are confident on a language and its working style start building small apps like calculator, tic-tac-toe etc. Also you can learn Data Structures and Algorithms for more advanced thinking process.

Apply yourself right away. Publish your app before it's perfect - hint: it will never be perfect. As Reid Hoffman says: "If you're not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you've launched too late". By putting yourself in real-world scenarios, you prepare yourself for the real world. When I wanted to become an iOS Developer working for a company, I changed my focus from learning cool things to learning cool things while following best practices. Best practices aren't set in stone. They're practices that experienced people find to be the best way of getting things done. That meant doing a lot of reading and talking to other engineers which was a huge step outside of my comfort zone. But that's how I found success.

The main aim of gaining knowledge is to apply it for the benefits of the society. For you to be able to apply a programming language, definitely you should have a very strong foundation about that language.

One thing I've found helpful: as a PLC Programmer, I suggest you to practice with a Raspberry Pi or Arduino because you can also do something "more real". For example the Arduino IDE uses a language that permits understanding the procedural programming paradigm but it also can be wrote in object oriented programming paradigm too; so, for example, if you write a simple program that blinks an LED you can rewrite in the other way. In my opinion is a good method to learn two languages, one more computer-like the other more "things"-like.

One thing I started doing early on that helped me understand what I was doing rather than become a copy-cat of a bunch of YouTuber's work was taking popular tutorials and changing the objectives. I'd add a feature or polish an existing one. I'd change the context of the app completely - even if it meant I was only changing String values. Once I started doing that, not only did I actually feel like these tutorials were "my" projects, but I was really able to understand what I was doing. I still do this today. You're never beyond learning. Another thing that helps is sharing your knowledge. Make your own tutorials, mentor someone. Teaching is the best way to learn and learning is living - especially in this profession.

Doing hands-on work is the only way to properly learn the nuances of a new language. No matter how much you watch others code, it will not give you the insights into these little things that you can gain from actually coding yourself. To start, you can find an open-source project and begin by going through the codebase, working on a small task first, or you could create your own project without copying and pasting from somewhere else.

Keep learning by doing what you love. Some people write blogs, tutorials, online teaching and some contributes to the open source.

Mastering a single language with its respective syntax and core fundamentals will allow you to transition to most other languages while maintaining key concepts that are transferable. After learning Java as my first language and trying to understand objects, logic, process flow, and other key concepts of programming, it became much easier to pick up new languages on the fly because of my in depth knowledge on the core fundamentals .

You really just need to learn 2 languages. One strongly type, compile time type checking like C++. I will not go much beyond C++14. Even 11 is mostly enough. Then learn a dynamical typed language like Python which has real objects and 'closures'. Every other language can be traced to these 2 except esoteric ones like Erlang. For most people C++ might not even be needed. So start with Python.

Understanding the core foundations of any given programming language in-depth would definitely help an individual to quickly catch the other programming languages as well. Learning OOPs concepts, abstraction, conditional formatting etc lays down the foundation for other languages as well, learning the new syntax is like an art, the more you use it the more your brain will become trained but what's more significant is not the knowledge syntax but the logical understanding of the programming.
