How can you learn GIS quickly with MOOCs?

MOOCs are indeed a good way to learn GIS. Being a very practical subject, I recently used one platform to get tips on a certain topic that I was teaching my students. It worked out well and I got the intended results I was hoping to achieve. These MOOCs are worth looking into as one way to start learning GIS.

How can I learn GIS by myself? Self-guided GIS The Open Textbook Library provides free access several GIS textbooks. Some of these books like Earth, Space, and Environmental Science Explorations with ArcGIS Pro are self-guide GIS workbooks that users can follow to learn geospatial analysis and tools.

If you are trying to stay up to date with GIS offerings, MOOCs are the way to do it. They are free, self paced and give you work that can be completed during the week in a small amount of time. I used them to stay on top of what's new or how I can help out our customers with new innovative methods.

MOOCs are wonderful training programs that are designed to upgrade our GIS knowledge and look into new frontiers of GIS applications. By following MOOCs it is showing that GIS is a powerful tool for analysis and visualisation of spatial data.

MOOCs can be a valuable way to build on/upkeep your GIS skills, learn new tips and tricks, and gain insight on how to apply geospatial tools to a specific industry. That said, as someone who was introduced to GIS in the classroom in undergrad and found it to have a pretty steep initial learning curve, I think it would help to start with a basic understanding of GIS to gain the most value out of a MOOC on the subject.

While they won't make you an instant expert, they enhance your skills, benefiting projects and your resume. I am not aware of many others than those provided by ESRI, which are good, but also designed as a primer to their software, although translating the techniques offered to Open Source solutions is possible (with a bit of effort).

A lot of the more popular MOOCs were name-checked, but the one offered by the industry leader was omitted. I am currently participating in the spatial data science MOOC offered by Esri, a FREE, 6-week course introduction to using ArcGIS pro with Python to complete common spatial data science tasks. They take one through the steps of installing ArcGIS to performing all the basic/standard operations, with hands-on exercises and discussion forums to help students master the tasks. I tried EDRI MOOC sessions and YouTube videos are my favorite ones. Coursera, edX, and Udemy are well-known platforms as well but if you have some experience you can find selected processes within a minute on the YouTube platform.

One of things that make Esri MOOCs very useful is that your interactions with other students are (1) readily available and (2) complete voluntary. But even as the introvert I am, I really recommend contributing and engaging with the contributions of others. This is the surest way of getting the absolute most out of the MOOC. Another recommendation I would make is to keep records of as much as you can: do screenshots, save videos, and especially any contact info and/or resource links. You’ll be glad you did later!

Doing things together is more fun, it adds some peer pressure and a way to learn from each other so inviting colleagues to join a MOOC together is one of the first things I advice.

The idea of success in MOOCs is very subjective. It depends on the goal learner has set for himself. Even if that goal is not met, learning something new even a fraction of that goal can be considered as success. However, In order to take maximum out of MOOCs, one should be clear in his head what he wants to learn. One should make a schedule and time bound target. While learning through MOOCs, he should have practical application of skills/knowledge learnt.

I believe it's very important to practice the skills learned during a MOOC after its completion. I find that the best way to do that is to focus on a project that would utilize the skills learned and attempt to reach the target without referring back to the material, to ensure that you've absorbed everything. It's okay if you need to look back, though, now you won't need to do again!

While I received an introduction to GIS and its applications during my time at university, I believe that what has truly benefited me personally is discovering the wide range of MOOCs available. These courses have allowed me to enhance my skills and explore innovative GIS applications. Furthermore, MOOCs offer an excellent opportunity to stay current in the field, especially for those who are balancing work commitments alongside their pursuit of knowledge. This becomes even more crucial with the growing trend of advanced scripting tools, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in GIS applications, as MOOCs provide a means to stay up-to-date with these advancements.
