As I outline in “From Ideas to Impact,” having a clear goal is critical to leading a high impact social team. Try and follow the SMART Goal principles. Don’t be afraid for it to be bold but having a clear theory of change is important. The right goal can inspire others to join you and make up for any implementation inexperience you or your team might have. Leveraging the expertise of other partners is critical and having a bold vision to inspire them is key.

A clear vision is essential for impactful initiatives. In my early career, a team I led lacked direction, leading to inefficiencies. Through a team retreat, we formulated a unified vision, emphasizing its crucial role in focusing collective efforts. Passion drives us, but a defined vision acts as our guiding star, ensuring effective channeling of efforts. I introduced vision alignment sessions and visual aids like infographics to foster clarity and alignment. Transparent communication, aided by feedback loops, has been pivotal. Leading in social impact requires strategic vision, communication, and alignment for lasting societal change.

Leading a social impact team efficiently requires delegation and empowerment. In a pivotal project, I shifted from micromanagement to empowering team members based on their strengths. This not only enhanced efficiency but also tapped into untapped potential. Empowering team members fosters a dynamic environment where creativity flourishes. Trusting the team to make autonomous decisions streamlined processes and nurtured a culture of accountability. Clear guidelines, coupled with autonomy, struck a balance between structure and innovation. From my experience, empowering individuals within the team is transformative. It not only boosts productivity but also cultivates collaboration, essential for meaningful social change.

Sure, trust them and empower them, but also ensure effective monitoring mechanisms to ensure that you can identify any issues before they become too big to manage. A workplan with weekly progress meetings is helpful, regular full team evaluation meetings are also encouraged, however at less frequencies (for example quarterly - depending on the timeline of the project)

Organizations and projects focused on social impact, particularly the ones tackling complex social issues need to move to becoming trauma informed. The individual, organization and the approaches to work all need to have wellness at the forefront. The question is, how do we approach work, expectations and timelines with the goal of achieving zero burnout? It's a different conversation, one that requires the acknowledgment that business goals are at odds with the typical wellness approaches currently being pushed.

Within the domain of social impact, the vitality of team members stands central. Acknowledge the profound challenges intertwined with the mission and emphasize comprehensive well-being. Champion the importance of periodic respites, facilitate access to supportive resources such as counseling, and embody wellness practices. A team that feels revitalized not only exhibits heightened resilience but also amplifies its productivity and fervor, fortifying its capacity to effect meaningful change.

The nature of social work is stressful and rushed. Ensure that your team has proper mechanisms to report on issues and challenges faced. If you are able to provide psychosocial support to the frontliners on your team, that is highly recommended.
