Ensure that every team member understands how their individual contributions align with the team’s goals and the organization’s vision. Clear goals provide direction and motivation, helping team members to stay focused and committed to their tasks. Regularly revisit and refine these goals to keep them relevant and aligned with any changes in the project or organization.

Your overarching goal may always fail, but make sure your team can always expect a sense of achievement in a reasonable timeframe. Designing your intermediate objectives to be monumental, complete, and reasonably spaced is a key aspect of running a highly motivated dream-team.

Leading a successful self-organizing team requires a balance of guidance and autonomy. Start by defining a clear vision and goals to provide direction. In an environment where command and control are minimized, a clear and well-understood vision becomes crucial. The team needs to have a collective understanding of the long-term direction – the vision. When everyone knows where they are headed, they can autonomously add value in ways that best support the journey towards that vision.

For the team to understand and adhere, the team will have to participate into creating the vision and goals. Collaborative sessions can help to define vision and goals, using tool such as "Postcard from the future" (where the team write a postcard from their future, indicating what they will be in a given time). Defining this vision collaborativly ,with a strong faciliator guiding the vision, set the foundation for self-organized team fully empowered to define what they want to be and how to achieve their goals.

Help your team execute its authority beyond its boundaries. Sometimes a small and painless change in the greater organization can yield tremendous benefits for everyone. If they're bending over backwards to stay in their box, don't give them free yoga classes. Help them rip it open.

Empower your team by delegating authority and responsibility. Trust team members to make decisions and manage their own tasks without micromanagement. Clearly define the boundaries of their authority and the responsibilities they are expected to handle. This empowerment fosters a sense of ownership and accountability, encouraging team members to take initiative and solve problems independently. By delegating effectively, you enable the team to leverage their collective expertise and creativity to achieve their goals.

Putting the right person in the right seat was a great recommendation from the book Traction - Empower your teams to own the things - let them commit to the priorities and be accountable for achieving them. Throw away the traditional org chart and craft an Accountability Chart: Complement it by a RACI. The key is Autonomy and the culture. The leadership should encourage creative disruption which is the only way to make exceptional results. Let them set their own high targets. Help them develop cross competencies required so that they become self managing, self sustainable. One thing, don't assume team will have wisdom to ace it in the first cycle - facilitate coaching and mentoring to ensure, they are on the right path.

An Agile leader's role does follow the traditional hierarchical command and control model. Our way of thinking is that the collective intelligence of well formed and established teams will help them reach their objectives. Our role is to guide and coach our teams on a journey of continuous improvement, to be effective, highly functional and self organised.

In terms of coaching for high performance and self management, I use Shu-Har-Ri. Three steps to build self sustainable - self managing teams. Shu = Blindly Follow the Rules Before your teams challenge these practices, let them learn them well and adopt - don't let them break the rules too early while they are premature Ha = Break the Rules: Once the team gain sufficient expertise, let them challenge the rules, prescriptions - let hem experiment more importantly learn their lessons. Ri - Be the Rule Third Stage is to let them become the expertise, the rule - when they have started trusting it. Ensure to inspect and adapt the process and the outcomes! Set the bar high and let them chase - Facilitate the process.

Another practice can be helpful could be Collective ownership. Collective ownership as an effective practice and a key principle of agile development can supports collaboration and communication in a team. By adopting collective ownership, the team members share the responsibility and accountability for the quality and success of the product or project. They also have the freedom and authority to make changes to any part of the code or design as needed, without being restricted by individual ownership or silos. This fosters a culture of trust and transparency, where the team members respect each other's work and provide constructive feedback.

Encourage team members to share ideas, insights and concerns freely. Create an environment where collaboration is not just encouraged but celebrated. Ensure that everyone's voice is heard and valued. I will ensure team members have the necessary skills and I would usually encourage offering training as needed. Establish regular feedback mechanisms for continuous improvement communication. Also, facilitates open and transparent communication as these encourage collaborations and alignment to project goals, Then I will provide guidelines but allow flexibility within them. Monitor Progress: Track outcomes, not just activities. Conflict Resolution: Address conflicts early and constructively.

The scrum principles of inspection and adaption is fundamental to the success of self organising teams. Effective retrospectives every sprint allows the team the opportunity to reflect on what works well, and where to focus on improvement opportunities. This gives rise to better cross team collaboration, as teams realise that they can only be successful if everyone is successful. That realisation drives ground level collaboration to ensure collective success.

Tailor your recognition methods to the preferences of individual team members, whether it’s public praise, private acknowledgment, or tangible rewards. Humans are motivated when they see an impact, when they see they contribute towards something meaningful. Let them see the impact before thinking of rewarding them with anything else. If you study how open source software is developed, people work so hard themselves? why? Focus on the empowered individuals - You can't feed empowerment to others - you must find out the people truly motivated and empowered to do the work - the rest is guaranteed. No super stars picked - ensure to avoid to political, complex, unhealthy performance appraisals - carrots and sticks approach to motivate your people. As long as your rewarding efforts are genuine, it doesn't matter what it is. Ensure you do your best from your end to recognize them.

Commit to continuous improvement and adaptability to lead a successful self-organizing team. Don't forget, there are at least two strata: - product improvement (what is built) - development process improvement (how it's built) Don't accidentally conflate the two, and check frequently whether you're still actually doing the latter. It's very easy for process improvement to become an afterthought, or vestigial altogether.

They say you learn more from your mistakes, but most people are unwilling to share those learnings because reliving the experience can be painful. I had one such experience on a team that I had only recently joined myself. We had a new team member join after me, and he was "not fitting in." Several team members came to me as the Agile Coach, asking that I address the situation. What happened next was nothing short of a disaster. My goal was to be fair to both the newcomer and the incumbent team members. The incumbents were having none of it and saw me as siding with the newcomer. What I learned is that difficult personal situations are difficult to resolve without trust. I didn't have it yet, and it cost me.

Trust and upskilling are two aspects I strongly advocate. Often times there is a lacking right skillset and that leads to mindset issues. Upskilling can pave the way to build mindset to try and do things in new ways Second point I will argue is trust. If an environment of trust is not established then people are hesitant to take hold steps and attempt great things. Trust ensures psychological safety and helps unlocking the full potential via Independence, collaboration,and mutual respect.
