1 Define the problem

The GOLDEN RULE TO UNLEASH CREATIVITY is to START POSTPONING YOUR JUDGMENT. In my experience as facilitator of innovation teams you can balance creativity and constraints in a perfect way following these three simple steps: 1. Draft an innovation assignment in which you state all the goals, all the constraints and all the criteria the new solutions have to meet. 2. Diverge by drafting a brainstorm assignment in the form of a “How can we …” question, and start brainstorming postponing your judgement, ignoring all constraints. 3. Converge by selecting the best solutions fitting all the constraints, and work them out as concepts, pretotypes and new business cases. Following these steps will make you an amazing innovator.

5 Evaluate and select ideas

After generating a large number of ideas, you need to evaluate and select the most promising ones for further development or testing. You can use different methods to evaluate and select ideas, such as voting, ranking, clustering, or scoring. As innovation facilitator, I advise you to use a PUGH Matrix TO SELECT THE BEST OPTIONS. Here’s the 7 step process: 1. Identify Criteria: Start by determining the key criteria that are important for evaluating ideas. 2. Define a Reference Concept: Select one idea as the reference concept for comparison. 3. Generate Alternatives: List down the different alternative ideas you want to evaluate. 4. Compare Alternatives: Evaluate each alternative comparing them to the reference concept. 5. Weight the Criteria: Assign weight factors to reflect their relative priority. 6. Calculate the Total Score: Multiply the scores by the weight factors. 7. Select the Best Alternative: Compare the total scores toidentify the one with the highest score.

6 Follow up on the session

The last step is to follow up on the brainstorming session and communicate the results and the next steps to the participants and other stakeholders. You should document and organize the ideas and the feedback that you generated during the session and share them with the participants and other relevant people. You should also assign tasks and responsibilities to the participants and other team members who will be involved in developing or testing the selected ideas. You should also schedule regular meetings or check-ins to monitor the progress and the outcomes of the brainstorming session.
