All too often, we rely on conventional wisdom. While one can't underestimate the usefulness of such wisdom, try branching out of a research comfort zone. 3. MOOCs are your friend. 4. Find an individual or network of individuals who you can discuss techniques and models with. 5. Keep current - the real world is fairly different from a macroeconomic model, so adding some context into a model is welcome.
