Knowing your current level of proficiency is the first step, then knowing there's a better level of proficiency and in confidence take courses or something that can help you grow, and practice continually to perfect the new level of proficiency you seek.

From my personal experience, the best method to keep your language proficiency at the utmost highest level, is being around native speakers of that language. I have noticed that lately I've been around more Russian speaking individuals, and for that reason I am noticing my vocabulary both expanding and remembering certain phrases and words that I have had forgotten. Aside from being around "that" specific languages native speakers, is media, it can be music, articles, podcasts, social media posts, simply put, anything that is surrounded that language. By studies, individuals have learn and expanded new languages by constantly listening to music in that language.

In my experience practicing helps keep my language skills at the forefront of my mind. We can be forgetful because life can get so busy.

In the current area where I live, a person has to be trilingual to give efficient service and information. I try to speak to the person in their home language and have seen this is much appreciated by them as they feel more comfortable in getting their ideas and requests across. If I don't know a word or phrase I ask the person I am speaking to for assistance, this also makes them feel good in that they can teach someone something

Since language doesn't really "evolve" like computer components, you need to treat it like a muscle of sorts. The more you use it, the better you condition it. Listening to AND speaking it. If you're already in a bilingual role, this muscle will get exercised rather often some days and not so much other days. Instead, request a queue (if one is available) that has just one or the other for a day or a week and really exercise that muscle. Do this on a regular basis and over time you will keep it honed and "up-to-date" as possible.
