How can you integrate writing into other subject areas?

Yes, this is actually important because it also help students to bring to remembrance some vocabularies particular to certain aspect of other subject areas. I remember when I gave my students a writing test on military regime. Words like coup , war, civil war, lieutenant- general and so on came out. It was a more enlightening experience .

In Nigeria, this is a key part of the English Language syllabus. So much that in the Senior secondary certification examination, students are presented with about six writing questions which cut across different genres. There is an informal letter where you may be asked to write to your cousin or friend about a particular experience, there are informal letters which may be persuasive asking to write to one's local Government chairman. There are also argumentative essays which can be on different topics. This opens the eyes of students to other world using writing.

Providing students with audiences to write for also helps support their understanding of writing genres. If students are struggling to understand the "why?" behind different types of writing, giving them a clearer picture of the intended audience can help. For example, you use more formal language when writing a letter to a politician than when sending a text to a friend in part because the audience is completely different for those two writing situations.

Students are likely already familiar with many different types of writing (advertising text, history books, blogs, social media posts, etc.). Discussing the differences between familiar genres of writing can help introduce your discussion for writing in a variety of subject areas. Model texts are extremely helpful for this. Reading a paper written by a physicist alongside one written by an English professor (or similarly different styles of writing) can demonstrate how much variety there is just within academic writing. If you're assigning readings to your students, teach them to notice the characteristics of the writing for texts they're reading. These readings can act as "mentor texts" showing how to write in that genre.

I think that writing can be inculcated into all subjects. Primarily in language education, writing is one of the four skills to acquire alongside reading, speaking and reading. So it is non-negotiable. However in other subjects, you can teach writing skills by asking open-ended questions. Instead of asking your students to respond by speaking, tell them to write down their responses. This is a very good way of sharpening their writing skills.

How? - History: Have students write historical biographies, timelines, or short stories set in a historical context. - English language: Have students write essays, poetry, and short stories, and practice using different writing techniques. - Art: Have students write about art history, describe art pieces, or write in response to artwork.
