With the modern technology and advanced integrated avionics, in my opinion the struggle of the PIC's is nowadays the information process and the decision making during critical phases of the flight. AI could assist/suggest the PIC with best reaction against an emergency/unusual situation/threat, not only as a check list assistant but in the process of deciding the most safe COA. In the military environment, it is crucial to prioritise the threats, suggest actions and assist in the crucial decision making to complex and aggressive manoeuvre/tactic for the fulfillment of the objective.

Le domaine de la maintenance prédictive en aéronautique est celui où l’IA, surtout sa partie ??machine learning??, a le plus de potentiel d’applications concrètes, avec une vraie valeur ajoutée. En effet, ses différents acteurs, des constructeurs aux centres MRO, sans oublier les compagnies aériennes, disposent d’une quantité phénoménale de données (BIG DATA), qui, s’ils sont utilisés pour l’apprentissage des algorithmes d’IA, peuvent aboutir à l’établissement de modèles prédictifs puissants et extrêmement fiables, pour réduire les immobilisations des avions et des équipements et de leurs co?ts d’entretien. Toutefois, l’enjeu étant les risques sur la sécurité des passagers, le défi majeur reste celui de certifier ces processus en amont.

I am not very knowledgeable on AI but can see a predictive model enhancing & reducing excessive maintenance tasks based on real time monitoring, accessing historical trends & defects noted over years. this could be a huge help for establishing safer but longer times between some inspection/maintenance tasks, reducing costs & down times. But it would need to be a robust system & proven before i would trust it! Could be a huge life/cost saving addition especially with accurate predictions, real time monitoring & real time reporting base/integrated on the HUMS system used in most larger helicopters today!

There are sort of statistical works in the field of airworthiness called Reliability which are basically constructed on the very basis machine learning algorithms use. So it's obvious that integration of ML into this category will enhance the maintenance operations and safety of aircraft. Also, it'll be cost beneficial for the operators.

AI can be used to secure sensitive information in aircraft electronic components in ways such as encryption of data post crash or accident/incident to minimise tampering of data. AI can can also be used to pick up suspicious behavior such as in a hijack situation and silently alert ground base and appropriate authorities, in the use of cameras and sign or body language deciphering.

These advancements are amazing and we shouldnt shy away from embracing them. However, a challenge for the commerical aviation industry at the moment will be the legislation regarding certification of AI systems. For example if you have a piece of equipment that needs calibrating, the organisation that performs this task can be audited and their own equipment calibrated against known international standards. The paper trail is robust and any failure can be traced to a source. With machine learning, how do you calibrate it? How do you effectively control the certification of any produced AI system? Does the ML training data require audits and oversight or just the end product? How do you control for unexpected behaviour, false positives etc.
