After my 1st three months w/ a scholastic fundraising organizations (kids w/ brochures, you and friends buy it, they get $$ for cheer camp) etc. For Talent Show, I do 5 min. standup. Ideal crowd, very homogeneous 700-800 or so, very family atmosphere, very successful year for many and company. We played golf on an LPGA course. At rehearsal, guy says 'you only have 5 min.,can't go for long story.' So I centered on golf jokes and stuff about management. The National Recruiting VP had a calm, Tenn. accent, "Hey, this is Rick," so using it brought everyone in. I'm describing a hellacious bad day, car exploded, he calmly cuts in, "How many demos did you get?" At finish, people saying you nailed it, confidence is a beautiful thing.

I'm not sure I agree with this point. There are a few universal languages and humour is one of them. If it's funny, it's funny. A baby will find it funny, an old lady will find it funny. As long as its tasteful humour, it will add depth and charm to the story. Another universal language is confidence. A dad joke told with confidence will be at least memorable.

I am against direct humor. Effective humor is subtle. Like when you eat a chocolate but you don't know what it tastes like. You have to put the chocolate in your mouth and taste it so that different flavors are released one after another and your tongue feels them. Indirect humor has the same feature. There is no requirement to express humor in words. Sometimes a humorous photo will be as attractive and interesting to the audience as writing a few paragraphs of text.
