What are the core principles that guide your SEL interventions? How do you want your students or participants to treat each other and themselves? How do you handle conflicts and mistakes? You can involve your students or participants in creating a shared vision and a set of norms that reflect your values. For example, you can use a circle process to invite everyone to share their thoughts and feelings, and to agree on some common rules and goals.

Restorative justice is a relatively new concept and, therefore, needs to be understood by many. The idea of a victimized party sitting across from their offender may seem foreign and abusive to some. Primarily, the interventionist should explain the concept and purpose to a close associate of the victim. Explanation with an acknowledgment of understanding will go a long way. Clearly defined goals should be made clear. In the case of SEL, stakeholders may develop a clear mind and steer any conversations and actions toward improving behavior and all social interactions.

2 Use restorative questions

When a conflict or a harm occurs, you can use restorative questions to facilitate a constructive conversation between the parties involved. Restorative questions are open-ended questions that help the parties to express their perspectives, emotions, and needs, as well as to understand the impact of their actions and to take responsibility for them. Some examples of restorative questions are: What happened? What were you thinking at the time? What have you thought about since? Who has been affected by what you did? In what way? What do you need to do to make things right?

3 Offer restorative options

Depending on the nature and the severity of the conflict or the harm, you can offer different restorative options to the parties involved. Some restorative options are: an apology, a repair, a restitution, a service, a mediation, a conference, or a circle. You can explain the benefits and the challenges of each option, and let the parties choose the one that they feel most comfortable and appropriate for their situation. You can also provide support and guidance to the parties throughout the restorative process, and monitor the outcomes and the satisfaction of the parties.
