Learning framing, lighting, application of color, and mastering camera movement are the basics that need to be mastered. To improve on this, I suggest watching and studying a wide range of films, analyzing how the basics of visual storytelling were applied, and building upon that knowledge. Most importantly, the goal of visual storytelling is to keep the audience engaged.
To start one must concede that the director has a vast knowledge of all things past. From there it is not enough to compile the already done but to employ originality and style that is unique and bold. You can’t proclaim a different approach if you have cherry picked from past accomplishments. You need a voice that is personal and then have the faith that it will deliver. If you are objective you will know exactly moment it happens
Yes!! When you see something you don’t like, think of ways to do it differently, or how it can be used in a more powerful way. Play with the colours, angles, and characters. I also keep a running list in my notes app of things I wanna try with my own spin, then when I get the opportunity, I choose a few, and give them a whirl

Yeah ok…if its your first film out of school however, you must find a voice that separates you from the pact. You can’t employ trends ir tricks currently used you must exceed those limitations and create a style of your own. Yes influence is ket but its not your destiny

An excellent exercise for me, and really it was a game-changer, was studying a short story and then adapting it into a short script with a focus on telling the story visually with as little dialogue as possible. How can you communicate the theme visually? Create set-ups and pay-offs visually? Reveal what a character is thinking visually? Where and how can you use visual metaphors? This exercise puts you to the test and calls upon all the film and script analysis you did in the previous steps. Remember, visual storytelling is all about the story and begins on the page.
One of the reasons this works so well is that it keeps you from being precious about your work. If you're trying to make your magnum opus everytime you set foot on set, you'll paralyze yourself. Experiment and play. Remember that you're always just a little better than the last thing you've made.
Agreed. It’s one of the best things to do. To really improve, one needs to learn from mistakes to grow and develop one’s own style takes practice and self reflection.

In my experience, I've found non-visual mediums to be the most inspiring. Reading good books and short stories ignites my imagination and inspires new ideas, which in turn inspires interesting visual techniques. At this point, my brain automatically edits what I'm reading, stripping out dialogue that could be action and re-writing description so it works on-screen in an engaging way.
Yes! When you think about it, historically film began as an extension of photography and as it progressed, borrowed elements of art movements like German Expressionism and Soviet Montage. It borrowed from stage and dance.
This is so true! When you think about how the top tier directors work, they visualize their film with traditional art forms( concept art, and key art come to mind). This is where the initial style of a film comes from. Great films are made in pre-production, and that means learning to communicate your visual style with more traditional forms of visual artwork. A day of concept art is exponentially cheaper than a day on set.

While I don't disagree with this idea in theory - pun indented - I've seen too many filmmakers get stuck here. They intellectualize every decision before they make their first move, and thus never make their movie. Eventually you have to stop "learning how to make a film" and just make one! Once you've got some momentum, maybe then you can dive back into this.
While it isn’t vital to get started, delving into the history of cinema is not only fascinating, but rich in visual storytelling. From the Russian film “Battleship Potemkin”, to French New Wave, to Japanese filming with Kirosawa and the classic “Koyaanisqatsi”. All tell stories is very different ways and all brilliant.
This is first year film school talk. It has nothing do with real world experience. All this advice is far below the working professional. I cringed while reading this. If you have not yet studied the points made in this article then you will never achieve anything great.

Collaborate with others is key. No film ever was created by one individual. The rest of the points are ridiculous. Ie) keeping up with trends…thats a trap to concede to the expected, allowing for nothing original nor creative. Its a trap for the conceded…the hacks. The plebes. Do not fall prey to followers.
David lynch never sought refuge in the norm. Like him or not one cannot place him in a box, bucking trends and allowing himself the ability to explore the unexpected. This is paramount to making a difference or just getting by. Show you voice….nobody else can do it for you.
Begin to uncover your own story and the role you play in it. From there, you will start to understand the narrative playing out around you, in seemingly insignificant places. Then bring that unique and personal perspective into your work.
