Data structures are an abstraction. A running, bug-free implementation of a data structure is not. We need to understand the difference. Example, linked list. (1) understand what the abstraction means, then write a (2) procedural implementation (say, C) (3) OO implementation (say, Java) (4) functional implementation (say, Scala or Rust). For each implementation, benchmark (5) single threaded (6) on 4 threads on a 4+core machine (7) understand why or why not #6 is faster/slower than #5. (8) optimize the code, and validate O(notation) complexity. (9) compare and contrast strengths and weaknesses of each implementation. (10) repeat with other data structures.

As a developer, I sometimes take basic data structures like arrays, hashes, and trees for granted. To deepen my skills, I make an effort to consciously apply structures to new complex problems I encounter. Thinking through real use cases like sorting recipe ingredients or social network friendship chains pushes me to consider performance tradeoffs of structures like lists, sets, and graphs. Implementing structures from scratch, rather than using standard libraries, helps cement fundamentals. Tackling new data modeling challenges sustains constant improvement. Staying curious keeps development skills advancing.
