You should think about what is required as a team or function, and what you might be interested in as individuals. As these two aspects do not always align, I always invite team members to think about both, thought as a team leader I always focus on the former in priority.

I would add that some development areas are better catered for by learning on the job and other through ad-on trainings. Learning on the jobs should be the primary enabler.

You should follow the instructions and guidance of your learning sources, as well as apply your critical thinking and analytical skills to understand and evaluate the information and knowledge you acquire. You should also practice and apply your new or improved risk management skills and competencies in your work context, as well as seek feedback and support from your managers, colleagues, mentors, or coaches.

I focus a lot on “coaching” through my consultancy and advisory work for that reason. I also focus on the ancillary tools required to embed what has been learnt - eg. prioritisation framework - and I check in 3 to 4 months after the end of the mission to loop back on learnings and progress made. This helps to maintain focus on embedding and continuous improvement.

6 Evaluate your learning outcomes

The sixth and final step is to evaluate your learning outcomes and reflect on your learning experience. You should measure and document your achievements and improvements, as well as identify any gaps or challenges that remain or emerge. You should also analyze and assess the impact and value of your learning outcomes on your risk management performance and results, as well as on your personal and professional development. You should also celebrate your successes and recognize your efforts and contributions.

Training provides the theoretical know how and is only half of the battle. Adoption and application of that training is the more critical half. To drive adoption and application of the training, assign risks to ‘risk owners’ with clear responsibility to monitor and manage that risk. This will allow the risk owners to practically and actively apply their knowledge.

Training and continuous learning including communicating adequately your risk management play a huge role. Failure to communicate your risk management weakens its effectiveness.
