Firstly we must be very clear about the objective: As it is Aerospace part its life Functions as well as reliability all depends on Surface finishes but also on Surface integrity, Residual stresses, Fatigue, Creep and Stress Concentration. So while designing as well as while machining special care has to be taken for selection of operations and functional variables and appropriate quality control mechanisms to ensure all these parameters within design limits. Aerospace parts are subject to most dynamic alternating stresses and sometimes at high temperatures and Vibration- so the question of reliability is so relevant.

First step before we define the method, we should be identify the risk, prevention and action for surface finishing which have potential to be issue. So the process documentation is important to be identified at first step to avoid wrong action taken on actual machining process. An example develop the PFMEA and control plan as the risk management. All potential failure related to the surface finishing process must be defined and documented. The potential failure i mean such as incorrect parameter machining, improper part clamping, failure material testing, etc.

As I know Quality Standards: Ensure compliance with stringent quality standards and specifications applicable to aerospace components. My opinion is Define Scope and Objectives:Clearly outline the scope of the aerospace procedure, specifying the activities and processes it covers.State the objectives of the procedure to provide a clear understanding of its purpose.Compliance with Regulations:Identify and incorporate relevant aviation regulations, standards, and industry specifications applicable to the aerospace sector.Ensure alignment with aviation authorities and international aviation standards.Process Mapping:Map out the entire aerospace process step by step, including each stage of manufacturing, assembly, testing, and quality control.Use flowcharts or process diagrams to visually represent the sequence of activities.

In my POV Choosing the right surface finishing methods and equipment is critical for aerospace components. It ensures precision, compliance with industry standards, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Additionally, considering adaptability to materials, technological advancements, training requirements, and environmental impact is essential for achieving reliable and high-quality surface finishes.

Next step is define the method machining refer to the surface finishing requirement. If we have the equipments in our factory, we should be have the master database capability for all equipments. So we can choose the equipment after selecting the method for achieve the requirements of surface finishing. As an engineer we can selecting the method by the data capability of the equipments, such as the maximum RPM, parameter, clamping pressure, transversal axis, and the accuracy of equipments can be achieved. Also data on supporting equipments and anything that can be support to achieve the requirements of surface finishing, like the data of cutting tools and coolant. These are steps that you can be followed to achieve surface finishing process

This is key - standardisation. Then deviations are easily found and can be measured against a known base of data. It may require several standard methods for several applications (gritting, coating, polish etc) and another level again for components but when it’s all standard the data will provide 4Rs. Reliability repeatability reproducibility and Rate.

After selecting the method, we need to documenting all the plan of method that has defined as standard instruction. One of kind of documentation is process plan. Process plan document is a detail of flow process to explain all process to achieve the goals. Process plan created as simple as possible, but covered all the requirements and the details of the process. Not all the details just the points the things (requirement of dimension, specification, inspection, setup information, tooling, drawing). Of course the main procedure has been created first before process plan created. This is the standard of documentation. So if we follow the procedure (in this case is process plan), it is possible to achieve the requirement of surface finishing.

Always include in your Training Programs/Procedures/SOP, the value for the Employees. When people understand the “Why” and “What’s in it for them”; they are always more inclined to get on board with the new SOP.
