I have personally had issues on my current, ironically newer, drill ship which was built with local Korean air compressors, HVAC systems, ect. We have seen many issues with steel casting, material longevity, and difficulty sourcing spares. This of course all ties into maintenance philosophy and frequency, all of which had to be created and addressed by the onboard team and implemented into our onboard maintenance system. Quality must be considered when outfitting equipment to one’s operation.

These data can help with maintenance planning and objectively assessing the equipment reliability against set/desired standards over time.

This involves using sensors and technology to continuously collect data on the equipment’s performance, which allows for real-time analysis and predictive maintenance. Due to issues like high operational costs which would determine the operator's survival within the industry, perhaps employing Condition Based Maintenance and Risk based Maintenance on critical equipment will be the best compromise between limited down time and improved operational efficiency - Critical equipment will be given adequate maintenance and spares are used appropriately without increasing operational costs. The maintenance regime for non-critical equipment will still be examined and restricted to standard running-hour based maintenance routines.
