How can you improve healthcare quality collaboration across departments?

In my experience stating and aligning the vision around common goals is highly dependent on individuals personal and professional goal. It is an old solution and one that is relevant today, how do we get to win/win. Even if the other departments agree with the goals they as stakeholders may have other needs which are more pressing to them. Recognizing how we work together to assure all our goals are realized and where we choose collectively on what we will and will not commit to as an organization,

Common goals and metrics require clear communication, transparency, team handoff, team rounding, and organizational/governmental requirements. Departmental leadership must all be onboard to embrace, model, and educate staff on the determined requirements, metrics, and key quality indicators.

In my experience showing the audience where they are now in terms of performance metrics and outcomes, followed by where you/organisation what a them to be then working collaboratively on the strategy to get there. Not looking at what you have but what is needed to ensure patients’ needs are the main focus.

Cross-Trained team members are able to better understand how their specific duties impact other deparments to improve the overall Patient's Experience in healthcare. It also increases the level of appreciation and respect for other's contributions to their specific department. Cross-Training and career development can be at a basic level (raised awareness) or at high level (full performance of some duties, if needed) both have the benefit of providing opportunities to Delegate and Elevate your team members.

An exercise on each other roles and responsibilities works well here. Asking a diverse and varied team to list what they think the other does, roles and tasks. Each discipline is listed around the room. Then beside that sheet the person who does the role to put what their role is and what tasks they do. It’s a great eye opener, a great way start the conversations about what is blocking them working together. A great winner when facilitated by someone who has done this before.

One thing I have found helpful is David Rocks simplification of neuroleadership. Everybody needs a scarf.... Status, consistency, autonomy, relatedness and fairness. This provides a strong framework to build behaviors on to support the growth of the team while honoring individuals strengths.

High functioning organizations promote cultures of safety to avoid blaming or shaming, resulting in low morale, lack of trust, and a lack of respect for colleagues/associates. Informed leadership engages in positivism. I like OSHA’s blueprint for success depicting cultures of safety: -Zero harm -Organizational vision -A just culture -Behavior expectations -Trust, respect, & inclusion -Key stakeholder’s engagement -Leadership & staff development

There are always going to be individuals that will agree with everything and never offer any changes or additions. Yet whatever is being implemented does not work for there department. It is necessary to ensure that everyone participates and agrees with the final product that will be submitted to all departments for review.

Here are some strategies for fostering successful collaboration: Begin by crafting a captivating mission statement that resonates with all stakeholders, ensuring it holds deep meaning and purpose. Then, establish transparent and purposeful incentives that harmonize with collective achievements, emphasizing the significance of team accomplishments over individual triumphs. Lastly, exemplify leadership by embodying the belief that the success of the team surpasses that of any one individual.

Firstly talk among each other. And a frequent change of roles among the leadership, bringing in cross departmental values and knowledge. This will only make the institution grow organically. Too often departments turn into silos which impedes progress.

Highlight the departments where collaboration has been effective. Offer these groups to present their strategies for successful collaboration, including how they were formed, why their groups works so well, and lessons learned. These organization-specific tips will allow others to see how it can work within their own workplace.
