How can you improve communication with your sales team?

I agree with much of what has been written here but I’d urge any sales leader to learn to relate to your team at a human level too. Having a leader prepared to take time to ask about your family, about your interests creates a real sense of ‘team’ and loyalty. People need to know that they’re valued. Making them feel that increases commitment and significantly impacts performance. As a bonus, it feels good too!

I have found that one of the most important, yet unspoken, factors to the success of SMART goals is to have team buy-in. If the team feels that the new SMART goals are being forced on them, the team may resist in a way that will spell certain failure for the SMART goals. In our department, the associates worked together in small groups to generate one smart goal per group. These smart goals were then presented to the entire team for review. It was up to the associates what SMART goals would be adopted and how those goals would affect annual performance reviews . It seems to be working because we all try to help each other meet (or exceed) these new SMART goals on a daily basis.

If they do not share what worked the rest will never try it, hence you lost the chance to boost results. Talk about best practices, single cases, main objections, what works, what doesn't etc. that's the only way to build a great sales team.

Every team member gets an opportunity to share their insights, the impact the chapters have had on their personal and professional lives, and predictions on what might come next. This approach does more than just address communication challenges. It provides a platform for team members to be vulnerable, deepening the bonds between us. Whether we're in the same room or connecting remotely, these book club sessions have become an integral part of our team culture.
