Over-communicate. Only about 25 percent of employees say their leader’s communication is well calibrated, according to a Stanford study published in the Academy of Management Journal. Under-communication is seen as a significant failure. Leaders are 10xs more likely to be criticized for under-communicating than over-communicating (unless you’re micromanaging). Those who under-communicate are viewed as less empathetic and therefore less able to lead. The remedy? Ask employees about their personal preferences and if ever in doubt, increase the amount of communications. Even if it’s not the perfect amount, leaders get credit because they care and mean well.

The busy schedule can sometimes cause problems on listening when thoughts are in somewhere else. Even if you are trying to listen your body language or wandering eyes can give totally different impression to those who you should be listening. Be clear to yourself on what is the goal on the meeting or 1to1 discussion. It is quite often often something else than your own agenda.

Empowering your team means giving them the resources, support, and guidance they need, but also allowing them to have autonomy and creativity. This is one of my top priorities. I try to act that way that my team has the courage to take action regardless of the outcome. You can always fix the broken or right the wrong. But without ownership to what people are doing you are doomed to spend your time on the things where people could thrive and get motivation from.

Story needs to be told when we are working towards the vision. I often use two different stories: What if we work towards the goal and what if not depending the audience and situation. On the story where we work together towards the goal there should be some kind of incentive that is meaningful. For example when we are building safety culture incentive can be the promise that everyone are getting home from work safely.

A fourth way to improve communication within your team using servant leadership is to appreciate your team members for their efforts, achievements, and strengths. Appreciating your team means recognizing and celebrating their accomplishments, both individually and collectively, and providing positive and constructive feedback.
