How can you identify your ideal career path using creative problem solving?

Creative problem solving doesn't actually have to start with a 'problem' per se, especially not when we talk about career paths. Think of it more as a challenge. Even if you are satisfied in your current role, you likely have challenges you are trying to solve now, or challenges you want in the future. Focus on those, rather than trying to identify problems that might not even exist. Being challenge focused means that you can really drill down into your motivations and let that drive the creative process of finding a solution that works best for you.

To define the problem you need to identify what created the problem. What do you feel at work and what do you want to feel while at work. This can help define the problem More than anything understanding your purpose and passion is a must. Which again align with your emotions. Purpose and passion will be the compass for your career journey. This enable to identify your swot and progression. Your honesty and integrity matters alot when defining your challenges

Each person is unique, find your sweet spot in capability, strength & passion then you can dig what hinders you to get the best version of you in your career. Examine all the problems and ask yourself with 5 times why, is it really what you want? Sometimes we just give up with the situation & not find our own path. Once you find your real ideal career path, congratulations you will be ready for the next journey!

Actually, one of the most important things you can do to spark creativity is to do nothing! Quite literally. You need some mental head space so you can be creative. This is why so called ‘shower thoughts’ are a thing or the reason why you might find that your best ideas come to you go out to walk your dog. If you feel like you have no creative thoughts, check in with your habits and see if you allow yourself to have the mental capacity to be creative. If you are constantly worrying about things to do or deadlines to achieve, it’s going to be difficult. Instead of trying to be creative first, try to give yourself some space. Go for a walk, meditate, do any mindfulness or breathing exercise and find something that works to still your mind.

Explore you passions, skills and values - write them all down. Brainstorm potential careers and analyze how each matches with you strengths and interests - rate them out of 5 Seek opportunities for your #1's internships, shadowing, informal interviews, freelance projects - get some hands on experience.

Mind mapping would be an amazing tool to use. Having center piece as the passion purpose along with the defined problem. Throwing ideas at different level and documents it.

To narrow in on my current role, I utilized an exercise I call 9 lives. Here’s how it works: 1. Jot down a list of careers you’d enjoy or consider pursuing. - Word vomit. Anything goes. - Don’t let salary or life filter out any careers 2. Narrow down the list to your Top 9. - These do not need to be in order. - Try to only include 2-3 careers that would be impractical financially. 3. Identify the passion and talent you would bring to each of those 9 4. Determine your needs - what’s the minimum salary I need? - remote or hybrid? - life circumstances or any other limitations that may make a career unlikely 5. Review and identify themes of your 9 careers 6. Put them in order from “ideal life” (#1) to #9

One of good tool to evaluate idea is six thinking hats. Which 6 coloured represents different perspective of the solutions generated. Green-Postive, black- negative, yellow-creativity, red-Emotional, white- information and blue to summarise present final. For this you may need some of your close colleagues help as different perspective can help to refine the solutions

If you are serious about finding an ideal career path, than work with a career coach or mentor. Because they are skilled at guiding you and make a choice that presents the least risk. Too often we are held back by fear of what if I choose the wrong career path? When in reality, it gives you experience to know what you do like and what you don't. The other element is don't let others fit you in their box. For example, in my case when I chose the career of Entrepreneur and focused on fusing two different fields, - I was told I am doing it the wrong way. Which exactly why I kept going, because Entrepreneurs are disruptors, innovators and often called crazy in the beginning. Choose what is best for you, fail fast and fail forward!

I often ask clients to sketch out their potential career paths and write down the pros and cons of different paths. This will include everything from their career prospects and alignment with their values to their health and private/family life. Then I ask them to imagine the best, worst and average outcomes of going down that path and to notice whether it feels right for them. Very often they will know just by evaluating their feelings towards a certain path which one would be more beneficial for them to take.
