1 Assess your interests

One way to find out what transferrable skills you have is to think about what you enjoy doing in your spare time. What hobbies or passions do you have? How do they relate to the job you want? For example, if you like photography, you might have skills in creativity, attention to detail, and technical proficiency. If you play an instrument, you might have skills in discipline, coordination, and self-expression. Make a list of your interests and the skills they require or develop.

An example I commonly teach students is to look at their traveling style when they're part of a group. Are they the ones doing the research into what locations they are going to? Are they using trends from social media to build the itinerary? Or are they the one keeping the schedule on track, making sure that everyone's goals for a specific location are hit before moving onto the next? There's a lot of overlap in the skills we use for our personal lives and our work lives; it's just a matter of analyzing where that is.

NEVER talk about "transferrable skills." When an employer hears "transferrable skills" they really hear, "Look. I'm not qualified for this job, but do me a favor and consider me anyways." They don't have to do you any favors. Talk about "transferrable ACCOMPLISHMENTS." That will impress the employer/interviewer because they will see that you are not trying to gaslight them. You don't have the skills. You know it. You are not pretending that you do. But you have similar experiences to which the skills are relevant and you are sharing that with them. This works. At least it has for my career counseling clients and the candidates I have submitted to employers who hired me to find QUALIFIED candidates for them. Employers like honesty.

2 Review your achievements

Another way to identify your transferrable skills is to look at your accomplishments outside of work. What have you achieved or learned in your education, volunteering, or personal projects? How did you overcome challenges or solve problems? What skills did you use or improve? For example, if you completed a course or a certification, you might have skills in research, analysis, and learning. If you volunteered for a cause or an organization, you might have skills in collaboration, empathy, and social responsibility. Write down your achievements and the skills they demonstrate.

3 Compare your skills

Once you have a list of your transferrable skills, you need to compare them with the skills that employers are looking for. You can do this by reading job descriptions, researching the industry, and networking with professionals. What skills are in high demand or relevant to the role you want? How do your skills match or complement them? How can you prove or showcase them on your resume? For example, if you want to work in customer service, you might highlight your communication, listening, and conflict resolution skills. If you want to work in IT, you might emphasize your technical, analytical, and troubleshooting skills. Tailor your resume to the specific job and industry you're applying for.

4 Update your resume

The final step is to update your resume with your transferrable skills. You can do this by using keywords, examples, and metrics. Keywords are the words or phrases that employers use to describe the skills they want. You can find them in job descriptions, company websites, or industry publications. Use them in your resume summary, skills section, and work history. Examples are the stories or situations that show how you used your skills in action. You can use them in your work history or achievements section. Metrics are the numbers or results that measure the impact or value of your skills. You can use them to quantify your achievements or outcomes. Use keywords, examples, and metrics to make your resume stand out and show your potential.

You should always update your resume. It does not have to be perfect and ready for sharing, it just has to include new things you have learned and projects you have completed. If you wait years to update your resume, I guarantee you will forget some significant things. Think of a resume while employed and not looking for a new job as a professional diary.
