How can you identify the strengths of each team member in a programming project?

The quickest and easiest way to assess the skill and experience of team members is to look at which tasks they take and how long it takes for them to complete them. This gives a fair amount of insight, but also reviewing their code will shed more light on the subject than just an outside view. By doing the code review, you can see their programming style and how they solve problems. By putting those two things together, it is very easy to evaluate the skills that they are comfortable with and the code will give you the insight needed on their skill level.

There are subjective and objetive ways to assess team members strengths. Subjective ones are difficult to describe, so, usually objective ones are used. Some objective ways to use are: - Time it takes to finish a task (less is better). - Quality of generated code (measured with an automated tool, usually higher number means better code). - Performance of written code (faster code is better). - Reliability of written code. It can be measured with tests which subject the code to some erroneus conditions and evaluate the response according to some previously established criteria. Direct comparisons between team members should be avoided. It is better to emphasize in a collective manner the skills which should be enhanced.

Understanding their aspirations helps you align their motivations with project objectives. Feedback is Fuel: Provide regular constructive feedback. Creating tests as some small challenges around their roles or jobs. You can evaluate their strengths base on code quality, duration done, optimization skills and their technical knowledge if they're fit for this roles/responsibilities or not. You can provide learning courses to test their learning skills to find out if they are good at searching, reading or learning new topics.
